Description

The Dicey brothers treat Gamay with the same respect they give their Pinots – organic farming, gentle handling, and zero fluff. The fruit comes off their Bannockburn vineyards, where schist soils and cool nights keep everything tight and bright.

2023 was a clean, balanced season, giving small, flavour-packed berries that suited Gamay’s naturally vibrant character. The fruit was mostly whole bunch, wild fermented, and aged in old oak and tank to keep things fresh and textured.

The wine is juicy and dry, with red cherry, cranberry and a bit of spice and stem for bite. Light on its feet but properly made, it’s a Central Otago Gamay that actually tastes like where it’s from – crisp, savoury and hard to stop drinking.

Bright, savory-edged aromas of dark cherries, wet bark, dried herbs, cured meat and pencil shavings. The palate is light-bodied with firmly framed tannins and vivid acidity that finishes slightly astringent. Drink now. Screw cap.

Viticulture
2023 will be remembered as a rare three-peat La Niña season. This brought a benign summer with good warmth and limited rainfall, continuing until mid-March when the weather shifted to almost spring-like conditions. The result was a cool, extended ripening phase that allowed all varieties to achieve peak flavour and ripeness. Mint.

Gamay 2023 – Dicey (Bannockburn, Central Otago)

Winemaking
Fruit was harvested mid-season in excellent condition. The majority of the ferment was destemmed, with 25% left as whole bunch. Fermentation lasted 19 days on skins, with daily hand punchdowns. Indigenous yeasts were used, followed by natural malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine was aged for 10 months in neutral oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered in February 2024.
