Description

Philippe Bernède represents the sixth generation to helm Clos la Coutale, an estate that has been growing grapes in Cahors since before the French Revolution. He’s a fierce defender of the region’s traditional, earthy reds, though he might actually be most famous in the wine trade for inventing the modern double-hinged corkscrew.

His sixty hectares of vines sit on gentle, south-west facing terraces sloping straight down to the Lot River. Growing fruit on these sheltered alluvial clay and limestone soils, rather than up on the windswept plateau, naturally softens the region's notoriously rugged edges.

The 2023 release is built around 80% Malbec, backed by 15% Merlot and a dash of Tannat for extra colour and structure. Every parcel is fermented separately in tank before being blended in January, followed by exactly twelve months resting in a mix of new and seasoned oak barrels and large foudres.

It perfectly threads the needle between rustic French charm and immediate drinkability. Expect dark, brooding fruit, a hit of star anise, and a damp, earthy backbone, all wrapped up in a surprisingly supple texture. One of our most popular French table reds.

"What a delightful nose, a full bouquet of ripe and gorgeous fruit: blueberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, with eucalyptus, mint, herbs and blackcurrant leaf. The palate is super silky and fleshy; so bright and juicy, with an orange-rind freshness and touches of burnt orange. There's good lightness, freshness and amazing value here.

Clos La Coutale consists of Malbec and Merlot.
The average yield of 45hl allows a good maturity and a regular quality over the years. The vinification is done in thermoregulated vats, regular punching down allows a good extraction of aromas and fruit.

Clos La Coutale is then matured in barrels and wooden casks for one year in order to obtain a good balance between tannins and fruit.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
