Description

"César Márquez is my Bierzo Winemaker of the Year for 2025... he is crafting wines with real finesse and a 'vertical' poise that marks him as a leader of the region's new generation."
- Tim Atkin MW

This is César’s Vino de Villa, or village wine, and it’s a beautiful snapshot of Valtuille de Abajo. Sourced from five different parcels characterized by sandy soils, this 2023 is a real step up in refinement. While the Parajes gives you a look at the whole region, this bottle is all about the specific elegance and perfume that Valtuille is famous for.

The blend is roughly 85% Mencía with the usual suspects like Alicante Bouschet and Bastardo making up the rest. César used about 30% whole clusters during fermentation, which really pumps up the aromatics. On the nose, it’s incredibly pretty - think dried geraniums, rose petals, and pomegranate. It’s got that "ethereal" quality that Bierzo fans hunt for, where the wine feels light and graceful but still has plenty of depth.

On the palate, it’s juicy and round with a fleshy texture of red cherry and raspberry fruit. Because it sits at a moderate 12.5% alcohol, the wine feels energetic and tense rather than heavy. There’s a nice little hit of licorice and herbal nuance on the finish that keeps it savory and complex.

Beth Willard gave it 95 points in the Tim Atkin report, noting its "firm grip" and impressive character. It’s a harmonious, fruit-driven red that captures the essence of the zone perfectly. If you want to see why Valtuille is considered the "heart" of Bierzo, this is the bottle to open.

96 points, "Perfumed on the nose, with dried geraniums, rose petals and herbal nuances. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, showing an ethereal character with delicate fruit. Subtle and refined, with a graceful finish. This comes from five parcels planted in the village of Valtuille. It’s classified as Vino de Villa, the designation for a village wine. Fermented with about 30% whole clusters. Drink now." - James Suckling

95 points, "From parcels in the heart of the Valtuille valley, this was only bottled two months ago at the point of tasting but was already very expressive. It offers elegance and great depth and complexity. The palate is fleshy with a firm grip, showcasing intense red cherry and raspberry fruit accented by subtle licorice. A wine with lots of character that captures the essence of the zone. 2025-2033" - Beth Willard (Tim Atkin Bierzo Report)

94+ points, "The village red 2023 Valtuille Vino de Villa comes from sandy soils on closer plots. This year, it's 85% Mencía, 10% Alicante Bouschet and 5% other white and red varieties like Bastardo, Sousón or Estaladiña. It fermented with some full clusters in 1,000-liter vessels and matured in 500-liter barrels. It's juicy, round, harmonious and fruit-driven, with freshness and elegance. It has a moderate 12.55% alcohol, a pH of 3.51 and 5.42 grams of acidity. 6,890 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2025." - Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate)

93 points, "The 2023 Valtuille Vino de Villa opens with aromas of pomegranate, violet, rose and cherry. The palate is compact, juicy and tense, with a slightly more enveloping texture and a fresh, sustained finish." - Joaquin Hidalgo (Vinous)
