Description

"César Márquez is my Bierzo Winemaker of the Year for 2025... he is crafting wines with real finesse and a 'vertical' poise that marks him as a leader of the region's new generation."
- Tim Atkin MW

If you’re looking for a perfect entry point into the world of César Márquez, this is it. The Parajes is César’s "regional" red, but don't let that title fool you. It’s a massive undertaking that blends fruit from 45 different tiny plots across nine different villages. With vines ranging from 80 to a staggering 142 years old, it’s a living history of the Bierzo region in a glass.

As is tradition in these ancient vineyards, this is a field blend. While it's mostly Mencía, there’s a good splash of Alicante Bouschet and small amounts of rare locals like Bastardo and Sousón. César ferments the plots individually to keep things precise, using a mix of stainless steel and oak barrels to find that perfect balance between fresh fruit and earthy structure.

The 2023 vintage is all about freshness and elegance. On the nose, it’s super aromatic with notes of white pepper, pink peppercorn, and bright red berries. The palate is fine-boned and juicy, with that classic Bierzo tension that makes it so easy to drink. It’s a bit lighter in alcohol than the previous year, which really lets those floral and spicy details shine through.

It’s no surprise this wine is getting serious international attention - it was actually ranked No. 8 in James Suckling’s Top 100 Value Wines of 2025. Luis Gutiérrez from Wine Advocate also called it a "bargain," and he’s spot on. It gets incredibly close to the quality of César’s more expensive village wines but at a much friendlier price point. It’s serious and balanced enough to age, but honestly, it’s so approachable right now that it’s hard to stay away from.

95 points & No.8 Top 100 Value Wines of 2025
"Perfumed on the nose with dried flowers, violets and herbal nervy notes that add cohesion to the floral aspect. The palate is medium-to full-bodied, more medium than full, with the characteristic elegant, transparent fruit of the vintage. With just enough nerve to add definition. This comes from many tiny parcels of old, head-pruned vineyards planted between altitudes of 400 and 750 m altitude on diverse soils. Aged exclusively in used French oak. This is an exceptional entry level and tremendous value. Drink now."
- James Suckling

94 points, "The 2023 Parajes is his regional red, a blend of different places, soils, expositions and altitudes (between 450 and 780 meters above sea level). It's a real representation of El Bierzo, with grapes from 45 different plots in nine villages. The vines range in age from 80 to 142 years of old and are planted with field blends—approximately 85% Mencía, 10% Alicante Bouschet and 5% other white and red varieties like Bastardo, Sousón and Estaladiña. There are always some full clusters, depending on vintage and plot, and part of the wine ferments in stainless steel and part of it is in bins, as he ferments by plot. The wine matured in 225-, 400- and 500-liter oak barrels for one year. It has moderate ripeness and 13.08% alcohol, a pH of 3.58 and 5.34 grams of acidity, making it lower in alcohol than the 2022 and with more freshness. It's serious and balanced, elegant and fine-boned. It gets very close to the village red this year. This is a bargain. 34,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2025." - Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate)

93 points, "The 2023 Mencía Parajes aged for one year in barrel. Aromas of white pepper, pink peppercorn and red fruit precede an intense, juicy palate with tension and fresh Bierzo character. This is well made, approachable and flavorful." - Joaquin Hidalgo (Vinous)
