Description

While Arturo and Kike de Miguel are best known for their exceptional terroir-driven reds, their sole white wine, the 'Trascuevas', demands just as much attention. The name translates to the "old caves" where Riojan families historically stored white wines meant for their own personal consumption. It is a brilliant, highly detailed homage to that tradition.

Sourced from three separate plots across Baños de Ebro, Ábalos, and Samaniego, the fruit comes from organically farmed bush vines that are over 50 years old, sitting on calcareous clay soils. The blend is predominantly Viura (around 90%), backed by small splashes of Malvasia and Palomino Fino. The winemaking is meticulous and patient: after a native yeast fermentation, the wine rests on its lees for 10 months, split evenly between large 500-litre French oak barrels and concrete tanks.

This release perfectly balances modern freshness with traditional Rioja weight. It is floral and elegant, opening with notes of yellow apple, pear, and citrus blossom. The time on lees builds a lovely, creamy texture on the mid-palate, but it remains taut and lively, driven by a saline minerality that carries through to a long, dry, and distinctly chalky finish. It is a serious, beautifully composed white.

"Creamy, mineral oak lifts the nose, showing roasted white sesame to the lemon zest and white fruit...Tense and flinty."
- Zekun Shuai (James Suckling)

"It's floral and elegant, with no oak in the aromas or flavors, and it has an elegant profile, with purity and balance. It finishes dry and serious, with a with a chalky sensation. This is very good indeed."

"Sheesh, this is distinctly a salty white wine, but has the juiciness and stone fruit richness to balance things out... Fragrant, flavoursome, then that crunch and pucker. Whaddawine!"

95 points - "Creamy, mineral oak lifts the nose, showing roasted white sesame to the lemon zest and white fruit. Bright acidity cuts through the medium- to full-bodied palate with a limey, gently saline edge to the long, lightly phenolic finish. Tense and flinty. Half the wine is aged in used barrels, the other half in concrete tanks. Viura with 5% malvasia and 5% palomino fino. Drink or hold." - Zekun Shuai (James Suckling)

95 points - "Arturo de Miguel only makes one white wine, but the talent he applies to his reds is evident here too. Now into its third iteration, it’s a seamless blend of Viura and 5% each of Malvasía and Palomino from Ábalos, Baños de Ebro and Samaniego that has subtle wood integration, aromas of cumin and white flowers and a palate of lemongrass, salted almond and wet stones. Delicious." - Tim Atkin MW

94 points - "The white 2023 Trascuevas Blanco is a blend of grapes from three plots in Baños de Ebro, Samaniego and Ábalos and is 85% Viura, 10% Palomino Fino and 5% Malvasía Riojana. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured with equal parts in concrete and 600-liter oak foudres for 11 months. It has moderate ripeness and a floral personality and is clean, young and pale, with some green tints. It has 13.1% alcohol and a low pH of 3.12 that indicates very good freshness in the wine. It's floral and elegant, with no oak in the aromas or flavors, and it has an elegant profile, with purity and balance. It finishes dry and serious, with a with a chalky sensation. This is very good indeed. 4,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024." - Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

94 points - "Sheesh, this is distinctly a salty white wine, but has the juiciness and stone fruit richness to balance things out, though you can’t escape the wild scratch of brine and nuttiness that accompanies. It’s seriously complex, intense in a way, super palate resetting and uplifting. Fragrant, flavoursome, then that crunch and pucker. Whaddawine!" - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
