Bodegas y Viñedos Artuke is at the absolute forefront of the modern revolution in Rioja. Run by brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel in the village of Baños de Ebro, the estate's transformation began in 1991 when their father made the crucial decision to stop selling fruit for bulk production and start bottling under his own name. Today, Arturo and Kike have taken that vision much further, crafting some of the most highly sought-after, terroir-driven wines in Spain.
For decades, Rioja has been defined by its time-in-barrel classification system - Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. Artuke has entirely abandoned this model. Instead of measuring quality by how long a wine sits in oak, the brothers have adopted a Burgundian-inspired approach that prioritises the vineyard. Their portfolio is strictly organised by terroir, starting with bright, regional field blends, stepping up to village-level expressions, and peaking at their highly detailed, single-vineyard "Grand Cru" sites.
To achieve this, Artuke farms roughly 22 hectares spread across 32 distinct plots in Baños de Ebro, Ábalos, and Samaniego. They are fiercely dedicated to preserving the historical landscape, working exclusively with old, untrellised bush vines—many of which they have personally rescued from abandonment—while employing organic and biodynamic farming principles.
In the winery, their approach is decidedly hands-off. The goal is complete transparency, favouring traditional methods like whole-bunch fermentation and foot-stomping alongside modern restraint. Fermentations are driven by native yeasts, and maturation takes place in concrete tanks or large, neutral French oak foudres. By stripping away the heavy vanilla and spice of small, new barriques, Artuke delivers pure, precise, and deeply energetic wines that taste distinctly of the earth in which they were grown.
