Description

Tasmanian Chardonnay finds a new entrant into the realm of premium Chardonnays from the talented Marco Lubiana.

Chardonnay in the south of Tasmania maintains excellent acidity, allowing the winemaker to pick quite late in the season and allow the fruit to develop deeper levels of flavour whilst maintaining freshness.

This is spot on from the sixth-generation winemaker.

It's rich & toasty but it has a wild streak. It's an exciting wine and a remarkable effort for young gun Marco.

"Feels serious, feels deep and potent, yet has good vitality too. Power and grace hand in hand."
- 94 pts, Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

The 2022 growing season started with some frost in the Huon, however the team was out in force burning fires on those frosty nights to mitigate as much damage as we could, we were successful and had little damage. The flowering of the grapes were good in both Huon and Derwent vineyards, the summer was moderate, not too much rain but more than average. The harvest period provided great weather conditions with little rain, this resulted in ripe fruit in pristine condition. The wine is a blend of the two sites, the soil types vary from Huon cobble stones with white clay to Derwent soil which is red clay over gravely chalk deposits. This vintage is very special to me I am very happy with the quality of my fourth release wines of 2022.

The 2022 Chardonnay is a mix of 40% Huon Valley and 60% Derwent Valley, from Estate Lubiana family vineyards, hand picked and hand sorted the grapes were whole bunch pressed to 228L French oak barrels with 15% new oak, the ferment was wild and slow, malolactic fermentation was carried out in Spring and the wine remained on full lees for 11 months. The wine was carefully racked out of barrel in February 2023 and bottled in June 2023 without filtration. The wine has a powerful nose, which to me has a mix of lemon meringue, flint, oak spice, hazelnuts and toast, the acid line is long and taut but balanced out by a rich and smooth texture. The wine is drinking deliciously well now but it will continue to improve with age.

94 points - "Younger gen Lubiana doing his thing. An attractive array of wines have been released under this label, made at the Lubiana home base. Great! It’s a rich and round chardonnay with a swathe of grapefruity acidity cutting through green melon, green apple, nougat notes and sweet spice. Lots of flavour, lots of character, some palate staining sweetness and more spice, a slick finish that rolls on with light, briny elements. Feels serious, feels deep and potent, yet has good vitality too. Power and grace hand in hand." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 points - "A mix of 60/40% Huon Valley/Derwent Valley chardonnay from Lubiana's estate vineyards; matured in French oak (15% new) for 11 months. Mid-straw in the glass, the 2022 release sports a little more concentration and horsepower under the hood. Lemony and citrus pure with notes of white peach, nectarine, fine spice, lemon curd, nougat, vanilla paste, struck match and grilled nuts. Powerful yet presenting great clarity and detail; minerally acidity vivid and driving, finishing long, rich and mouth-filling." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "A flinty reduction on the nose is assuaged by the softening hints of malolactic on the layered palate. Acacia, hibiscus, orange rind, a fleck of ginger and nectarine splayed long. This really is a lovely mid-weighted wine of considerable extract, verve and a winning tension, worth putting away for five years to a decade. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

Marco Lubiana

Marco Lubiana is the latest of his bloodline to take up winemaking. The Lubianas have made wine in Italy since the 1800s, with Marco's father Steve founding his acclaimed biodynamic wine label, Stefano Lubiana, in Tasmania in 1990.

Marco has a degree in Oenology and Viticulture and biodynamic farming in his blood. His wines are carefully farmed and brought to bottle with a mostly natural methodology. An established and well-known vineyard recently purchased by the Lubianas is the source of the fruit. His first releases are incredibly good. Clearly the grape doesn't fall far from the vine.

Get in early on Marco's wines. As word gets out, these premium Tasmanian cuveés will disappear in no time.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
