Description

Albe is G.D. Vajra doing things the old-school way, Giuseppe Vaira's tip of the cap to the great Piemontese winemakers of the 1950s and 1960s. Before single-vineyard bottlings became the main event, Barolo was all about blending, pulling together fruit from different sites to make something complete. That’s exactly what this is.

It’s a mix of three high-up vineyards: Coste di Vergne, La Volta and Fossati, each facing a different direction. The 2022 vintage was a roasting, parched season that had plenty of local growers sweating, but Giuseppe sees these tough years as moments that mature the wines. He completely avoided over-extracting the fruit, turning out a release that feels a touch lighter than the 2021 but makes up for it with supreme class and immaculate balance.

The wine jumps out with wild strawberries, dried flower petals, citrus oil and a cool hint of mint, backed by a fine, chalky tannin grip that keeps the back end clean and long. It's a proper Barolo but not unapproachable as many can be in their youth, meaning you can happily cellar it or pour it tonight with a bit of air.

As always, straight-up value from a family at the peak of their powers.

"Deeper red fruits, spice, orange peel, a little earthy, some perfume like rosehip. Medium to full-bodied, has freshness, a ripe lightly grainy grip to tannin, finishes clean and long. A really good Albe. Distinct, quite open, and already good to drink."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "A blend of Fossati, La Volta and Coste di Vergne, and sometimes the ability to blend different vineyards gives you more options, and possibly complexity. Tasted at the winery, but also earlier in the year with favourable impressions both times.

94 points - "A very exuberant yet delicate nose of rose petals, clementine peel and raspberries. The palate is medium-
bodied with supple red fruit and silky tannins. Very pleasant. Drink now or hold." - Jacobo García Andrade (James Suckling)

92 points - "Bright ruby colour. Dried flower and gentle balsamic scents are joined by fresh cherry and strawberry, mint
and a tickle of alcohol. It is plush on the palate with sweet berry fruits and chewy tannins, with some breadth,
though the acid is fine and nicely lingering to conclude. Not overly complex, but this does have easy appeal." - Stephen Blandford (The Real Review)

The 2022 Vintage

The year began with dry weather and warm daytime temperatures. By March, the water table had been partially replenished by snow and rainfall in the mountains. Budburst commenced on 25th March, and the following two months brought a succession of gentle rainfall, along with several severe hailstorms that, fortunately, spared our vineyards. After a gradual flowering, warm conditions settled in early June and continued throughout the summer.

With the arrival of September, temperatures dropped, creating ideal conditions for the Nebbiolo harvest. Picking began on 16th August and was completed by 14th October. The 2022 season was a timely reminder of the resilience, resulting in low yields but wines of vibrancy, flavour and juiciness.- Squadra Vajra

The true Beauty of Albe is the caress of the sun that rises three times every morning over our vineyards. It’s the exceptional simplicity of nature that makes the awakening of life an everyday miracle. – Milena Vaira.

Albe is our tribute to traditional Barolo and its ‘maestri’. It is a blend of high-elevation vineyards where, each day, we witness three beautiful sunrises—or albe. Albe comprises Barolo DOCG vineyards with exposures ranging from south-south-east to south-west, situated at elevations between 380 and 480 metres above sea level.

In 2022, fruit for our Barolo Albe was picked between 23rd September and 12th October. Grapes were sorted manually three times: directly on the vine, as whole bunches on the sorting tables, and finally as individual berries after destemming. Vinification was carried out in a custom-designed vertical tini, with gentle punch-downs and pump-overs. Maceration was extended, lasting an average of 36 days with a partially submerged cap. Spontaneous malolactic conversion occurred in stainless steel during the following spring. The wine matured for 22 months in large Slavonian oak casks of 40, 50 and 75 hectolitres. Bottling took place between 16th and 20th June 2025.

The 2022 Albe shows a lively, translucent garnet red hue. The nose opens with delicate rose petals, candied cherry, and amarena, followed by hints of cedarwood, juniper berries, and wildflowers, alongside a gentle touch of sea breeze and forest floor, all lifted by notes of lemon blossom and blood orange. On the palate, mountain strawberries and juicy dark fruits are carried by a silky texture and refined tannins. The finish is lingering, long and beautifully mineral. - Squadra Vajra

G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra is a small, artisanal family producer and one of the benchmark modern day producers in Barolo.

The wines are now made by the family's second generation, with Giuseppe in the winemaking driver's seat supported by his siblings; Isidoro and Francesca under the watchful eye of father and founder Aldo and their mother Milena.

These are stunning examples of the regional staple varieties, made with one eye on tradition and one on progression. With holdings in the commune of Barolo as well as Novello, Sinio and Serralunga, they cover some of the most sought-after terroir in the region and make the most of it.

As noted wine writer Antonio Galloni once wrote, theirs is “a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level”.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
