Description

The wine that defines Dagueneau’s legacy.

‘Silex’ is the most iconic of the domaine’s cuvées, drawn exclusively from flint-laced soils on the north-facing slopes of Saint-Andelain. This is Sauvignon Blanc taken to its absolute edge - structured, stony, almost elemental in its intensity. It’s not just the terroir that speaks, but the way it’s been interpreted: low yields, mature vines (35–65 years old), wild fermentation in custom oak ‘cigar’ barrels and glass Wineglobes, with a long, slow élevage that shapes the wine without dulling its nerve.

In 2022, the Silex is laser-cut and tightly coiled, showing that classic Dagueneau precision - white florals, citrus pith, a flash of green mango and crushed herbs—wrapped around a spine of pure, mineral tension. There’s a quiet richness to it too, but it sits deep in the wine, waiting for time to pull it forward.

Don’t rush it. Five years minimum in the cellar is wise; ten is better. When it unfurls, Silex reveals itself as one of the most powerful and pure expressions of Sauvignon Blanc on earth. A wine that demands patience and rewards it, profoundly.

"Dry and tense, it really needs time to mellow... a wine of drive, firmness and upright structure... lemony, wild goat cheese-like note and a distinct flinty whiff."

94 points - "The 2022 Silex is not a lot of fun upon release; dry and tense, it really needs time to mellow. There's flesh from the clay element of its clay-flint soils, which is felt on entry but tightens up as it moves through the mouth. This remains a wine of drive, firmness and upright structure; it speaks of the place it comes from rather than its variety. Aromatics are almost a forgotten element; this is a wine about structure and texture. There is a lemony, wild goat cheese-like note and a distinct flinty whiff. Silex, after all, means flint in French." - Rebecca Gibb MW (Vinous)

    A special stone

Silex is arguably the most well-known wine from Dagueneau. Keep it in a cool cellar for 10 years if you can.

If anyone wonders why this domaine is so famous, this wine holds all the answers. Silex is the ultimate Dagueneau wine in many ways: super-mineral, pure, crystalline and typically long-lived. Silex means flint, and this wine is produced only from the flint-rich soils on the north-facing slopes of the hill of Saint-Andelain. The vines mostly range between 35 and 65 years old, and yields are kept lower than in most other vineyards. Silex ferments and ages in Dagueneau’s famed cigar-shaped barrels and other casks, and a portion now matures in 220-litre Wineglobe—neutral glass vessels that avoid reduction and allow for lower SO2 levels. Because of the soil type and the concentration of the mature vines, this wine is always intense and often austere when young, typically requiring several years (between five and 10) to truly express itself.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
