Description

Buisson Renard has become one of the cult cuvées of the Dagueneau stable - a wine of subtle power and unmistakable pedigree from a cooler, clay-and-flint site on the southwest flank of Saint-Andelain. Once known as Buisson Menard, a critic’s typo rebranded it ‘Renard’ (fox bush), and Didier Dagueneau liked the new name so much he kept it. The rest, as they say, is history.

In 2022, the wine is as riveting as ever. It was fermented and matured in the domaine’s signature cigar-shaped barrels - 450–600L vessels custom-designed to maximise lees contact and build mouthfeel without sacrificing line. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc with real breadth and architecture. It opens with layers of fennel, quince and ripe citrus, grounded by that tell-tale Dagueneau flintiness and wrapped in a gentle, savoury grip from the lees.

Buisson Renard is typically a little more textured, a little more savoury, than its siblings. It walks the tightrope between richness and restraint with serious poise - generous without being showy, detailed without being austere.

If Silex is the spearpoint, Buisson Renard is the slow-burner: nuanced, complex and powerful. A rare bottle and one to watch unfold with time.

95 points - "I’m a bit of a fan of the Buisson Renard. At the bottom of the hill below the winery in the village of Saint-Andelain, there's a greater proportion of clay to flint, giving a broadness to the wine's shape that envelops the whole mouth. In 2022, you can smell the warmth of the vintage and experience its richness and yet its sense of lightness. There's an appealing chew to the wine, and on the finish, a salty residue that makes you want to continue drinking. It retains acidity, line and length and provides precision. Its maker, Jean-Philippe Agisson, believes 8-10 months in stainless steel after being in barrel plus filtration gives the wine this tightening belt." - Rebecca Gibb MW (Vinous)

This wine is priced above Pur Sang these days, indicating how highly the domaine rates this site. Buisson Renard is a cool mid-slope terroir on the southwest side of the Saint-Andelain hill. The soils are a mixture of clay and flint (or silex, as the French call it). The site was historically named Buisson Menard, as was the wine initially, but a wine writer mistakenly reviewed the wine as Buisson Renard. Renard means fox in French, and Buisson means bush, so the error gave the wine a name that sounded like ‘fox bush’. Didier Dagueneau fell about laughing and renamed the wine from the next vintage. Again, this fermented in barrel and matured in Dagueneau’s bespoke cigar-shaped barrels (450 and 600 litres).
