Description

"Angelo Gaja is, without question, the most famous wine producer in Italy. Possibly one of the most famous in the world. He is credited with developing techniques that revolutionised winemaking in Italy.
- International Wine Challenge

Promis is where the Ca’ Marcanda story begins. It was the first wine released from Angelo Gaja’s Bolgheri estate - a project born not out of impulse, but a long, drawn-out search for the perfect piece of coastal Tuscan dirt. After years of negotiations (hence the name Ca’ Marcanda, meaning house of endless talks), the Gaja family secured their spot in Bibbona in 1996, planting Bordeaux and Rhône varieties into the dark, clay-rich soils just inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea.

This blend of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese speaks to that site - sunny but breezy, fertile but complex. The wine is fermented parcel by parcel with a bit of whole bunch for lift, then matured in older oak for 12 months before blending. It’s made to drink earlier than its siblings, Magari and Camarcanda, but still carries that signature Gaja finesse.

There’s generosity here, but it’s never showy. It’s the kind of wine that makes you stop mid-conversation - not because it demands attention, but because it earns it.

Importer's Notes:

A blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Syrah, and 10% Sangiovese, Promis is sourced from vineyards across Bolgheri and Bibbona, with the majority located in Bibbona on dark, clay-rich soils.

The three varieties are fermented separately over a period of 2 to 3 weeks, each retaining approximately 15–20% whole bunch during fermentation. The wines are then aged in a mix of tonneaux and barriques for 12 months. After ageing, the parcels are blended and matured in bottle for a few months before release.

The name Promis, derived from the Italian word for "promise," reflects the Gaja family's commitment to producing world-class wines from this region.

Gaja

The Gaja family has been producing wine in the hills of Barbaresco, Piedmont since 1859. But it was under the leadership of Angelo Gaja from the 1960s that the estate rose to global prominence, redefining what Italian fine wine could be. Today, his children - Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni - are guiding the next chapter of the family legacy.

Gaja’s wines are a benchmark of modern Italian winemaking - bold, polished, and built for the long haul. Single-vineyard bottlings like Sorì Tildìn and Costa Russi broke new ground for Barbaresco, while plantings of Cabernet and Chardonnay challenged tradition and put Langhe on the world stage.

Beyond Barbaresco, the family now crafts celebrated wines from Bolgheri and Montalcino, and most recently, from the volcanic slopes of Etna under the IDDA label - a joint project with Alberto Graci that’s turning heads for its purity and poise. Wherever they go, Gaja remains a symbol of innovation, ambition, and Italian excellence.
