Description

Giuseppe Vaira once described Ravera as “crisp like the sound of a Telecaster” - and honestly, that nails it. This is one of the crowning jewels in the Vajra line up and one of the most sought-after crus in the region. It’s cut from the Ravera cru, a site renowned for giving structure, tension, and drive, and in 2021, it’s got all the dials turned up.

Harvested over three measured days in mid-October, the Vajra family handled this fruit with reverence. A long, slow fermentation stretched to 55 days, with submerged cap maceration teasing out every layer of nuance from these Serravallian soils. Then: 26 months in large Slavonian oak. Time, patience, faith.

What comes out of the bottle is absolute clarity. Red berries and crushed stone meet white pepper and cedar. There’s wild fruit. A lick of blackcurrant. A mineral hum that rings through the finish. The tannins polished like river rocks. It's an absolutely stunning Barolo in peak form.

Ravera does best with some time in bottle. It’s a long game kind of wine - the sort that reminds you, decades down the track, why you fell in love with Barolo in the first place.

"From one of the most sought-after crus sites today, the G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Ravera opens to a vibrant ruby color. The wine takes its time opening, especially when tasted young, but that delay bodes well for its future bottle evolution. This wine is built like a wall, with each brick representing its own distinct character."
- Monica Larner (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

"Wild berry, dog rose, violet, hay, menthol and spice aromas waft out of the glass on the incredibly fragrant and gorgeous 2021 Ravera from G.D. Vajra."

"Cool ‘mineral’ acidity, energy and density of flavour, tannin runs to a more sandstone grainy character on a finish of outstanding length. Touch and go for 97 points. Superb."

97+ points - “From one of the most sought-after crus sites today, the G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Ravera opens to a vibrant ruby color. The wine takes its time opening, especially when tasted young, but that delay bodes well for its future bottle evolution. This wine is built like a wall, with each brick representing its own distinct character. There is dark fruit, pressed flower, herb, ebony and a very elegant mineral side. The bouquet is direct and vertical, with lifted intensity over a medium-plus palate. The tannins are elegantly managed, and this wine has the latitude for long cellar aging. It ferments in stainless steel and ages in large oak casks.” - Monica Larner (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

97 points - “Wild berry, dog rose, violet, hay, menthol and spice aromas waft out of the glass on the incredibly fragrant and gorgeous 2021 Ravera from G.D. Vajra. Full-bodied and succulent, the delicious palate delivers raspberry compote, strawberry, baking spice and star anise alongside tightly woven, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it youthfully tense and balanced.” - Kerin O’Keefe

96+ points - "Raspberry, red cherry, almond, dried flowers, leaning into an incense-like perfume. Medium to full-bodied, dark red fruit, ferrous, with cool ‘mineral’ acidity, energy and density of flavour, tannin runs to a more sandstone grainy character on a finish of outstanding length. Touch and go for 97 points. Superb." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95+ points - “The 2021 Barolo Ravera is laced with bright, red-toned fruit, iron, spice, cedar, tobacco and dried herbs. Bright acids and beams of tannin give the Ravera its distinctively driving feel. Today, the 2021 is a bit sinewy. I suspect it will always remain a vibrant, steely Barolo. The Ravera is a fine choice for readers who appreciate the more savory, mineral side of Barolo.” - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

I am intrigued by Ravera’s indomitable personality. It is crisp like the sound of a Telecaster, straight and electric. – Giuseppe Vaira

Ravera is recognized as the most important single vineyard in Comune di Novello. It grows on a very complex underground where marls of Tortonian origin mix with sandstones and clays of the Serravallian period. Our parcels are located in the southern amphitheatre, between 320 and 340 meters above sea level. 100% Nebbiolo. Comune di Ravera.

Ravera was harvested over three days, on October 11th, 15th, and 16th. Grapes were sorted manually three times: directly on the vine, as whole clusters on the sorting tables, and lastly as single berries. Vinification was carried out in vertical tini, with gentle punch-down and rinsing of the cap, and lasted 55 days, including a submerged cap maceration. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurred in the following spring. Aged for 26 months in large Slavonian casks of 25 and 50 hectolitres. Bottled on July 26th, 2024.

The 2021 Barolo Ravera soars out of the glass with red fruits, white pepper, blackberry pie, red candies, cedar and savory notes. Wild berries, black currant, crushed stone and a mineral sensation saturate the mid-palate of this juicy, very generous Barolo. – Squadra Vajra

G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra is a small, artisanal family producer and one of the benchmark modern day producers in Barolo.

The wines are now made by the family's second generation, with Giuseppe in the winemaking driver's seat supported by his siblings; Isidoro and Francesca under the watchful eye of father and founder Aldo and their mother Milena.

These are stunning examples of the regional staple varieties, made with one eye on tradition and one on progression. With holdings in the commune of Barolo as well as Novello, Sinio and Serralunga, they cover some of the most sought-after terroir in the region and make the most of it.

As noted wine writer Antonio Galloni once wrote, theirs is “a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level”.
