Description

Riesling sings in the hands of Duncan Forsyth.

This wine shows a textural, off-dry style of Central Otago Riesling that drinks beautifully now or could cellar for a decade plus.

The fruit is all organically farmed, then whole-bunch pressed and allowed to finish ferment with a little residual sugar in the wine to find balance against the bracing backdrop of acidity that is typical of Riesling from this region.

This is a top flight release here from one of Otago's finest artisan labels.

"It’s a class act. So delicious to drink, thirst-slaking and stacked with personality. Benchmark stuff."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Half of the ferment is arrested with some residual sugar, the other half fermented to dry. It’s an intuitive thing how this works year to year. The wine is fermented and matured in cigar-shaped, stainless steel barrels and stainless and tank, all on full, fluffy lees. All wild fermented. Riesling at Mt Ed has been a national benchmark, alongside luminaries like Rippon, I reckon Te Whare Ra, Fromm, Framingham and similar. Winemaker Duncan Forsyth even has a tattoo ‘riesling’ in Garamond font.

"This is no slouch. It has texture and weight but insane acidity and purity under the sluice of almond nuttiness and light herbal etch. Stacks of bright green apple, soft but fresh, lots of pink grapefruit juice and exceptional length that finishes pretty but with sorbet-like dryness and vitality. Fruitiness tempered well. It’s a class act. So delicious to drink, thirst-slaking and stacked with personality. Benchmark stuff." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

93 points - "Aromas of fresh apricots and melon follow through to a medium body, with a pretty core of fruit as well as acidity that frames the wine nicely. Solid riesling here. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - James Suckling

A delicious off dry style from a cooler vintage for Central Otago. Whole bunch pressed, fermentation in a mixture stainless steel barrels and tanks, wild yeasts, no temperature control and aged on gross less for 3 months. RS 10g/l

Floral and citrus aromas, flavours of kaffir limes and grapefruit, some initial sweetness underpinned by herbal mineral characters and ending dry with refreshing acidity.

Mount Edward

Mount Edward is a team of passionate winemakers/rabble-rousers who have banded together to form a collective that is considered at the forefront of the Central Otago avant-garde.

Duncan Forsyth is one of the founders and spearheads this revolutionary project, with Swiss winemaker Anna Riederer heading up the day-to-day duties and crafting the wines.

They've made plenty of noise since the project's inception in 2003 when Duncan met co-founder John Buchanan.

Though they don't take themselves too seriously, the wine themselves are very serious indeed and a receiving plenty of attention.
