Description

Gioso knows exactly what they're doing when it comes to delivering classic, unpretentious Piedmont reds. Their Nebbiolo d’Alba bypasses the hefty Barolo price tag entirely, focusing instead on the steep slopes of the Roero region to build a more immediate, fruit-driven expression of Italy's most famous grape.

The fruit is pulled from thirty-year-old vines sitting between 280 and 330 metres above sea level, spanning the left bank of the Tanaro river and pockets of the nearby Langhe. Rooted in deep, bluish-grey calcareous marl and facing south-west, these sites soak up enough afternoon sun to ensure those notoriously fierce Nebbiolo tannins soften properly on the vine.

After destemming, the ferment kicks off in stainless steel tanks held at a strict 28 degrees. Following a natural malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked into large-format Slavonian oak barrels for nine months of resting time, allowing the structure to knit together without swamping the juice in heavy wood spice.

It skips the aggressive austerity you sometimes find in young Nebbiolo, delivering a generous core of crushed red cherry and dried earth wrapped in a slinky, tensile grip. It's ready to rip straight away, especially if there's a serious bowl of braised meat or rich pasta on the table.

93 points - "Medium-full tile-red colour; rusty iron aromas of classic nebbiolo, with glimpses of roasting meats, dried cherries and dried mushrooms. The palate is full and firm, very drying with savoury flavours and lots of fine-grained poiwdery tannins, all lingering long on the aftertaste. Deep and serious flavour and structure, suggesting it would reward a little more time in the bottle. Very good potential." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

92 points - "Shy of medium weight, crisp in general profile, tart and yet dense in red berry fruitiness, blood orange tang, white pepper, some vermouth-like botanical notes and a touch of juniper. Exotic and refreshing per se, it’s a cool, breezy nebbiolo with enough tannin mettle to let structure be a word thrown around here while also offering a youthful drinkability overall. Charming stuff all up." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

This Nebbiolo is grown on the sunny and steep vineyards of the Roero region – in between the left bank of the Tanaro river and some areas in the nearby Langhe region – where full-bodied and fruity wines are produced.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
