Description

Domaine André Colonge & Fils' Brouilly "Gorges de Loup" is everything you want from a classic Beaujolais Cru—honest, vibrant, and packed with character. From a family estate in Lancié that’s been perfecting the craft for generations, this wine comes from siliceous-clay soils that give it plenty of depth and structure.

The grapes are all handpicked, with careful sorting to keep the quality spot on. After a semi-carbonic maceration lasting about two weeks, the result is a wine that’s smooth and approachable while still carrying a solid backbone of tannins.

In the glass, it’s deep ruby with notes of black fruits, a touch of liquorice, and a smoky, mineral edge. The palate is silky yet bold, with rich fruit giving way to warming spice on the finish—this is the kind of wine you can drink now or stash away for a few years.

Perfect for those who love Beaujolais with a bit more muscle, this is a fantastic example of what the Brouilly cru can offer.

This 2.30 ha vineyard has been worked for many years by the elders of the Colonge family; we were handed the baton at the 2011 harvest.

Brouilly is the southernmost of the Beaujolais Crus. The terroir and its siliceous-clay soils give us a robust wine with black fruit and sweet spice aromas and flavours.

Whole bunch, semi-carbonic maceration is at low temperatures. It lasts around a fortnight and gives us round and silky tannins.

Tasting notes:
- A thick deep ruby robe with cherry tints.
- Really racy with loads of style, the nose tends more to the complex than to the exuberant. It gives a succession of jammy black fruit, spice and liquorice notes, to which are added a touch of minerality and smoke.
- Very thick and silky on the attack, the mouthfeel is warm, set around powerful cellaring tannins. Notes of fruit in brandy give way to a finish that centres on spice.
- Indisputably a great showcase for the terroir, this thoroughbred cellaring Brouilly will seduce lovers of the style.
