Description

For over 150 years, this family have made wine but it wasn't until 1984 that patriarch, Arturo Pelizzatti Perego (see Ar.Pe.Pe.) decided to dedicate himself to the pursuit of making world-class Nebbiolo from their home region of Valtellina.

Their fabled terraced vineyards are found in the heart of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG, with their plantings split across three sites: Sassella, Grumello and Inferno. Sassella is all red rocky soils and perilously steep slopes. A diabolical place to grow grapes, however, the results of Nebbiolo grown on this site can be mesmerising.

This is one of the rare Nebbiolo wines outside of the Piedmonte region that drive collectors crazy. This is a beautiful release and will mature elegantly for a decade or more.

Edelweiss you always hoped to see as a child on mountain walks, but the hikes were often longer than your breath and most of the time you got tired before you found it. The beauty is that you always had the desire to return to look for it at the cost of reaching the glacier. As did the climber who dedicated a route to our wine: you can look for it on the maps of the Rhaetian side, that of the Alps where the Sassella is carved.


Valtellina Superiore Sassella Stella Retica DOCG , almost a tongue twister, like the first sip: tight enough to capture you still astonished, soft enough not to catch you unprepared.


Long maceration can also be very good for young wines, which year after year will be able to amaze you with their innate ability to evolve.

Arpepe is an historic estate based in Valtellina in the very north of Italy, specialising in Nebbiolo, with an alpine twist.

Arpepe, is often written as Ar.Pe.Pe. which are the initials of the modern founding father, Arturo Pelizzatti Perego. The family have been growing Nebbiolo here since 1860 but Arturo founded the modern incarnation in 1984. The variety is known locally as Chiavennasca.

The family now have over 13 hectares within Valtellina Superiore DOCG area, around the areas of Sassella, Grumello and Inferno, making a bewildering amount of different Nebbiolo. They all reflect an overarching philosophy of viticultural practice in synergy with the rhythms of the Alps, and slow, long maturation in the cellar.
