Rivar Ferguson-Mayer’s Bloody Hill wines are some of our favourite Yarra Valley releases each year. Fresh, pure and elegantly crafted, these Villages wines always offer great value for money.
These three wines were our pick of his latest releases. Try a bottle of each for yourself.
Rivar Ferguson-Mayer is clearly his father’s son - same fearless approach in the winery, same instinct for texture and energy - but his own style is already coming through. This 2025 Villages Shiraz shows it perfectly: lifted, spicy and deliciously drinkable without being overtly herbal.
The fruit comes from ten-year-old vines in Coldstream, north-facing and planted to clone 1654. Rivar’s gone hard on the whole bunch this year - about half the ferment - and it shows in the perfume and fine, chalky tannins that give the wine its shape.
It’s light on its feet but full of flavour: dark cherry, blood orange, dried herbs and a little cured-meat savouriness. There’s grip, freshness, and just enough wildness to keep it interesting.
One of the best-value Yarra Syrahs on the market, and maybe the pick of the reds releases this year.
Rivar Ferguson-Mayer continues to hit his stride with this fresh, mid-weight take on Yarra Cabernet. It’s made in the family shed at Bloody Hill, but the fruit comes from de Bortoli's in Coldstream - the same patch of the valley that’s home to some of the region’s most elegant reds.
This is Cabernet done the Mayer way: picked early, wild fermented, no heavy oak, and just a touch of Merlot and Petit Verdot to round out the edges. It’s bright, pure and aromatic - think blackcurrant, bay leaf and a little pomegranate lift - with that lovely cool-climate crunch that keeps you coming back for another glass.
It’s supple, juicy and already drinking beautifully, but with enough fine tannin to give it shape. You won’t find many Cabernets this honest and this easy to love for the price.
This Pinot comes off the young vines on the Mayer family’s home block - the actual Bloody Hill. “You walk up and down it and you’ll know why I call it Bloody Hill,” Timo likes to say. It’s a slope that’ll test your legs, but it gives fruit with incredible lift and energy.
Rivar Ferguson-Mayer is steering this one his own way. He’s pulled back on the whole bunches, chasing brightness and immediate drinking appeal instead of the wild, savoury edge his dad is known for. The fruit was mostly destemmed, wild fermented and aged in old oak for six months.
You're left with a deliciously light, juicy Pinot packed with red cherry, cranberry and gentle spice. It’s fresh, effortless and made for drinking, not cellaring, not showing off, just pure, unadulterated Pinot from a proper bit of Yarra dirt.
This is Bloody Hill Rosé, Mayer-style - Syrah picked off the Coldstream home block, given just a night on skins, then pressed and sent straight to barrel for a slow, wild ferment.
It’s pale, dry and demure, full of red berries, spice and a faint herbal edge that keeps it fresh. This is delicate and barely blushed, with crisp, lively fruit and a lovely, gentle texture from the barrel work.
Made by Rivar Ferguson-Mayer, it’s the sort of rosé you'll open a second bottle without thinking twice. Light, savoury and moreish, it’s built for balcony afternoons, park picnics or wherever good company happens to be.
A satisfying rendition of Yarra Valley Chardonnay from the second generation Rivar Ferguson-Mayer.
This is an elegant, mineral-driven Chardonnay from a cool site. It's made with little tinkering, from Mendoza clone fruit grown on a former Bress site in the Yarra, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in old barrels with no new oak and no malo.
As with all the Bloody Hill wines, it's about capturing freshness and easy drinking appeal as a young wine.
It's cool, fleshy with a crisp, clean finish. It's a delicious, if not A-typical modern expression of the Yarra Valley from a young winemaker on the come up.
Where his father's wines may be known for their funk and wildness these releases from young Rivar Mayer are more classic in their styling.
This Pinot Gris is spot on for those looking for a traditional look at the variety that offers a little more texture than usual.
This comes from a neighbouring vineyard in Healesville. Freshness and clarity of fruit is front and centre.
It's so good to see a more traditional styling of Gris that is still made with intention and attention to detail. Very easy to drink and lots to love.
