Description

Pierre and Sophie Larmandier are crafting some of the finest Champagnes of the modern era.

They take a much more natural approach to their craft than most in the region, managing their 15 hectares in the south of Côte des Blancs biodynamically (highly unusual for Champagne) and opting for a more hands off approach in the cellar. Their ferments are wild and often long, they keep the dosage low across their range of cuveés, producing dry, mineral-charged wines with incredible drive and purity.

The 'Latitude' is a non-vintage cuveé comprised of vineyards located along the same line of latitude in the south of Vertus. Forty percent is reserve wine (stocks started in 2004), with dosage coming in at a very low 4 grams/litre.

This is typical of their house style. It's long, dry, elegant and crystalline, showing both power and finesse. A gorgeous Champagne and remarkable quality for the price.

92 Points - "The Latitude from Larmandier-Bernier is a powerful, structured wine. Deep and resonant on the palate, the Latitude packs a serious punch. There is no shortage of depth or intensity, that much is clear. Like so many wines based on the 2015 vintage, the Latitude has a slightly vegetal quality lurking beneath the fruit that is evident but not to the point of being overpowering. Aeration helps that slight vegetal quality in the wine dissipate, although it does not disappear entirely. Dried apricot, sage, fennel, crushed stone all open up in the glass, adding layers of nuance. Readers should expect an imposing, rich Champagne that will be at its best at the dinner table. Like all of the Larmandier-Bernier Champagnes, the Latitude will offer its best drinking if opened several hours in advance. This release is 60% 2015 and 40% reserve wines. As always, Latitude emerges from clay rich soils that confer breadth. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 2017. " - Vinous

    My favourite

For me the best Champagne for that range of price. Brioche, super fresh, live and complex. I havem't had anything better in the price range!

    Delicious

Latitude if far more flavoursome than other champagne that I have tasted. Not just bubbles and sweetness.

    Sublime

It is really worth seeking out these top grower Champagnes. Normally I would shy away from 100% chardonnay styles, but I can see now it is only because I haven't had the good stuff. This is a truly beautiful champagne with a lot of depth and complexity.

In the past, this cuvée was known as "Tradition", a name chosen in the 1970's by Pierre's parents.

The name "Latitude" was chosen to characterise better this very round cuvée, with its rich, charming style.

It is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes which all come from the same "latitude": the south of Vertus. A generous terroir and grapes picked fully ripe: the Latitude cuvée is the festive Champagne par excellence, which nonetheless retains the characteristic purity of the estate's Champagnes.

This non-vintage cuvée contains 40% of wines coming from the estate's perpetual reserve started in 2004.

The grapes are pressed gently, the juices are clarified very slightly and then go directly into wood. The natural alcoholic fermentation (indigenous yeasts) and the malolactic fermentation begin spontaneously in the Stockinger casks and vats. The wines are matured on the lees during their first year, with no filtering or fining being carried out.

The blending and the tirage are carried out in July. The bottles are taken down into the coolness of the cellars and stacked on lattes, the second fermentation takes place and maturation goes on for at least two more years. Each bottle is disgorged by hand 6 months before being marketed. The dosage is only 4 g/l (extra brut!).
