Description

Pierre and Sophie Larmandier are crafting some of the finest Champagnes of the modern era.

They take a much more natural approach to their craft than most in the region, managing their 15 hectares in the south of Côte des Blancs biodynamically (highly unusual for Champagne) and opting for a more hands off approach in the cellar. Their ferments are wild and often long, they keep the dosage low across their range of cuveés, producing dry, mineral-charged wines with incredible drive and purity.

The 1er Rosé is pound for pound, one of the best pink wines in Champagne.

It's made from Pinot Noir which is bled off as free run juice then left on skins for a few days. Few producers make their Rosés this way in Champagne nowadays, however it's the best way to distill the essence of the variety in a wine.

It's pretty, pure, and so devastatingly easy to drink.

96 Points - "Quite a rich, powerful style, though you’d use the word ‘elegant’ too. It feels very ‘pinot noir’, quite vinous, cherry and spice to the fore, almost powerfully. Character and detail here. Licks of cherry, berry, touch of balsamic lift, some nuttiness and good dose of vivacious bubbles. Feels unfettered, pure, energetic. Outstanding wine." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

    Its a premium product

2017 vintage, disgorged in October 2019. Saignée literally means 'to bleed'. In winemaking parlance it means to draw the free-run juice of a grape off the grape skins typically prior to, or shortly after, the start of fermentation. In this case, the grapes (100% Pinot Noir) are allowed to macerate for several days before the juice is drawn off and it is this 'soak' that gives the colour and much of the body and flavour to the wine.

This technique is now extremely rare in Champagne--it is a demanding method of vinification that requires grapes with an excellent degree of maturity. Hence most rosé (in Champagne) is made by the addition of a little red wine. Vive la difference!
