Description

Francis Egly is one of Champagne's most iconic cult figures.

Alongside Selosse and Larmandier-Bernier, his wines are considered some of the very top expressions of small-scale Champagne. Revered for his incredibly vinous expressions of terroir, Egly has been one of the leading figures of the grower Champagne movement for several decades. Noted for his rich, intense, Pinot Noir dominant style, these are remarkable, cellar-worthy wines that paint a unique picture of Champagne.

This cuveé combines Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Grand Cru vineyards across Ambonnay, with a little from Bouzy and Verzenay. The dosage is low (4g/l), the fruit quality is excellent, the winemaking considered and precise.

It's a classic representation of Egly's house style - a dry, firm, intense sparkling of prodigious length. This will go toe-to-toe with many, many higher-priced Champagnes and come out looking the goods.

95 Points - "From the very first cuvée, Egly-Ouriet is distinguished for its ability to preserve exacting precision and outstanding chalk mineral focus in the midst of magnificent generosity. A vinous wine of calm authority, carrying the full grandeur and complexity of carefully tended, low-yielding, old vine Pinot Noir on some of Champagne's most revered grand crus... A paradox of luxurious generosity and crystalline purity." - Tyson Stelzer (The Champagne Guide 2015-2016)

92 Points - "The NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is gorgeous. Rich, resonant and expressive on the palate, but with the freshness that is now part of the house style, the Brut Tradition is wonderfully complete. Dried pear, smoke, crushed flowers and chamomile are finely-knit in this super-appealing, mid-weight Champagne. The current release spent 54 months on its lees, which is decidedly on the long side for a wine in its peer group. Then again, long aging is one of the things that distinguishes these very special, artisan Champagnes from the pack. Disgorged: January 2017." - Antonio Galloni (Vinous.com, December 2017)

    Amazing wine

My favourite Champagne bar none. Sooo much flavour, persistence and drinkability. A must try.

This is a striking wine that reflects both the superb Grand Cru vineyards from which it is sourced (predominantly Ambonnay but also Bouzy and Verzenay), as well as the perfectionist viticulture and winemaking of Francis Egly. It's made up of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from low-yielding vines that have been harvested fully ripe. Natural fermentation with wild yeasts only and the first period of maturation (before going to bottle) lasts almost one year with the wine remaining on its fine lees for the whole time. The wines clarify slowly and naturally, as was once typical across the region, and as such there is no fining nor filtration. Over 50% of the wine is fermented and aged in oak casks and the dosage is tiny, around 4g/l, so Extra Brut territory.
