2024 Poggio Anima Chianti DOCG

This is Chianti made the old-school way — bright, savoury and refreshingly unpretentious.

It comes from Riccardo Campinoti, best known for his Brunello wines at Le Ragnaie, but here he's dialled things back and kept it simple. It’s 100% Sangiovese from vineyards near Siena, fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, then aged for a short stint in old oak. No new barrels, no additions, no fuss — just clean, honest fruit.

In the glass, it’s all about clarity and crunch. There’s a gentle rustic edge, the kind you want from Chianti, with lovely acid and just enough grip to hold its own at the table. It’s not pushing for power or polish — this is a wine made to drink, not to overthink.

Perfect for pasta, pizza or anything else that needs a bit of Italian charm.

2024 Ciu Ciu Piceno Montepulciano Sangiovese

This organically-farmed pitch-perfect casual red wine comes from the easternmost region of Central Italy, the Morro d'Alba region of the Marche, between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic sea.

By combining the soft, plummy characters of Montepulciano with the tannin and savoury characters of Sangiovese, the Bartolomei family make a big but balanced red that is going to be a big hit at your next BBQ.

For the bucks asked, this is a little ripper of a red, and it's organic and certified vegan to boot.

2023 Tenute Orestiadi Molino a Vento Nero d'Avola

Nero d’Avola from the black soils of the Belice Valley, this medium to full bodied wine is full of rustic flavour and charm.

Quite a nuanced wine here, with a broad range of flavours and aromas from berries to liquorice. Nero is such a seductive wine, the aromas pull you in close with the depth and power, while on the palate there is a softness to the wine, balanced so nicely with that classic Italianate tannin style.

A wine that speaks of place and screams with value-for-money deliciousness.

2021 Maretti Langhe Nebbiolo

For lovers of affordable Italian table wines, the Maretti wines, crafted by the winemaker Danilo Drocco, have been delivering above and beyond for many years.

The Langhe Nebbiolo adds another delicious string to their bow. The fruit is macerated for only a short time before being pressed off to barrel. The intent here is to deliver a Piemontese Nebbiolo that is ready to drink now. Drocco has been very successful.

The tannins are super fine and moreish, the fruit is bright, energetic and has the signature rusty colour that you might associate with very traditional examples of Nebbiolo from this region.

This is one of the best value Italian Nebbiolos you will find.

90 points
"Fresh and vibrant, a Nebbiolo delivered in a lighter framework here, though it still speaks well of the grape variety. Red cherry, new leather, a little mint, spice and orange peel. Tannin is present, but supple, delivering a little rusty grip to the wine, and it finishes well too. It’s not deep or concentrated, but does deliver a lively glass of Piedmont at an affordable price."

2023 Babo Chianti

The Babo Chianti is smashable Sangiovese 101 at a very fair price.

Highly-regarded Tasmanian winemaker Justin Bubb traveks to Italy to make this delicious Chianti - one of the few to be bottled under screw cap and retain all that lovely purity and freshness.

This freshness and juiciness is a result of half of the wine seeing carbonic maceration. Filled with cherry, earthiness and that classic savoury Sangiovese finish, it's a cracker wine for when you're feeling a little Italianate.

2024 G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso

This is the type of wine that will get you hooked on the succulent red blends of Barolo and beyond.

The three main varieties in this wine - Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto - are made for each other, especially when guided by the capable hands of the Vajra team.

It's purpose built to be utterly un-put-down-able. A flourish of red fruits, Spring flowers and sweet spices makes this match perfectly to all matter of foods.

It's one of the most affable and delectable table wines from this region getting around at the moment, and ridiculous value to boot.

"It’s a staple of many in this country looking for a juicy and early drinking expression of Piedmont red."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

As usual another beautifully curated mix pack from the DD team. All wines were great, with the stand outs being the Chianti & the Langhe Rosso.
