We have just 12 of these packs available.

2022 Sato Riesling

The Sato Riesling is a dry, textural style of Riesling, a little different to the typical off-dry examples out of Central Otago.

Around half of the fruit is fermented using carbonic maceration, bringing a savouriness and palate weight to the fore.

The rapier-like acidity of this region is on full display from the Satos but with a little more dimension and interest thanks to some very clever winemaking.

2020 La Ferme de Sato Schisteux Chenin Blanc

As the name "Schisteux" suggests, the Chenin Blanc on the Sato vineyard is grown on the parts of the site that are richest in schist soils.

This imparts a distinct minerality to the Sato home farm Chenin Blanc, in a not-too-dissimilar mode to the great Chenin Blancs of the Loire Valley.

Chalky yet textural and absolutely delicious, this a powerhouse Chenin Blanc that will not disappoint.

2020 La Ferme de Sato Chant du Vent Chardonnay

The Sato Chant du Vent Chardonnay is sourced from across the three blocks planted by Yoshiaki and Kyoko Sato on their small vineyard in the shade of Mt. Pisa.

"Chant du Vent" translates to "Song of the Wind", which refers to the whistling noise created by the wind as it hurtles through the vineyard posts. The Satos want this wine, along with the Sur Les Nuages Pinot Noir, to represent their whole farm, so in a way, this is the Siren Song of the Sato vineyard.

It's a rich yet mineral-driven Chardonnay with plenty of weight and flavour. It will drink well now but also reward mid-term cellaring.

96 points
"A complex and complete chardonnay with acid energy guiding the wine. Full-bodied with fabulous fruit of sliced apples, cooked apples and salted caramel with flint at the end. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
- James Suckling

2018 Sato Pisa Terrace Pinot Noir

Yoshi Sato's Pinot Noir is an ethereal example of how to translate site into wine via natural winemaking.

There's nothing added, nothing taken away during the winemaking process. Every ounce of character from this organically farmed site is preserved in the glass.

It's a wine of rare precision and delicacy and one that is highly sought-after by collectors in the know.

If you want to try the very best natural wines in NZ, this should absolutely be on your list.

95 points
"Ripe strawberries on the nose with some pie crust and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with beautifully integrated tannins that are ultra-fine and long. Such poise. Gorgeous. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
- James Suckling

2021 Le Ferme de Sato Alyssum Gamay

The Sato La Ferme wines are those organically grown by the Satos on their own estate.

In next to no time, this has become one of the greatest Gamays in New Zealand. The alluvial soils of Yoshiaki & Kyoko's vineyard bring incredible structure to this wine. It has tannin, it has depth, it could go toe-to-toe with any Gamay grown anywhere on Earth.

Organic farming, gentle winemaking, with only a couple of barrels made you'll have to be quick if you want this rare bird as part of your collection.

95 points
"Very floral with white pepper and it evolves beautifully. Medium body with fine tannins. Orange peel. Dried spices. Silky and caressing in the finish. A more opened and alluring gamay from here."
- James Suckling

2020 La Ferme de Sato Sous Bois Cabernet Franc

"Sous Bois" translates to "Forest Undergrowth", which is reminiscent of the earthy, savoury characters that present in Cabernet Franc grown on the Sato home vineyard.

It's a rarity to see this variety in Central Otago - a region dominated by Pinot Noir - but on the North-Northeast facing slope of Block Four of Kyoko and Yoshi Sato's vineyard, it gets to perfect ripeness.

As with all Sato wines, there's an elegance and freshness to this wine that harks back to something old world. It's very, very good.

93 points
"A juicy and savory cabernet franc with cherries, plums and hints of flower stems. Earth funk. Medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins and an wet earth finish. Mushroom. Drink now."
- James Suckling

Sato

Yoshiaki Sato and his wife Kyoko harbor a deep passion for wine that led them on a unique journey. Originating from careers in international banking in Tokyo and London, they took a bold step toward realizing their wine aspirations by relocating to New Zealand. After a brief period at Lincoln University in Christchurch, where they pursued a graduate diploma in viticulture & viniculture, they eventually found themselves in Central Otago.

Yoshiaki Sato honed his craft during a two-year tenure at Felton Road alongside Blair Walters and a time at Mount Edward with Duncan Forsyth. The year 2009 marked the inception of the Sato label, as they acquired organically produced grapes, crafting their first 250 cases of Pinot Noir. A fervent advocate for organics and biodynamics, Sato adopts a hands-off approach in the winery, relying on natural ferments sans commercial yeasts, eschewing additives in the fermentation process, and employing minimal sulfur just before bottling.

In early 2016, the Satos made a significant investment by acquiring a 5-hectare (3.2 hectares effective) east-facing plot on Mount Pisa near Cromwell. This chemical-free site, featuring Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gamay Noir, and Pinot Noir plantings, serves as a testament to their unwavering dedication to sustainable and quality winemaking.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
