Four outstanding value reds from Alex Head, featuring the 96-point 2023 release of Old Vine Grenache.
The Old Vine Grenache is one of Alex's specialities and arguably one of the first and most important Grenache wines of the modern era to inspire the flood of more refined Grenache we see emerging across Australia today.
The fruit from this 166-year-old vineyard gets full opportunity to show its true character. An extraordinary wine for its price. It shows a rare restraint in the use of oak. It's all about the dark rich fruit, and with fruit this beautiful, by Jove, it should be! Lots of baked earth and spice flavours too.
An excellent contemporary example of Australia's world-class Grenache capabilities.

"Stunning stuff and fabulous value. 200 dozen. A crimson/magenta hue, the nose is a mix of strawberries, florals, raspberries, milk chocolate and coffee grinds. The wine offers impressive intensity and is wonderfully seductive with silky tannins and great length. This is a brilliant Grenache and can be enjoyed for at least a decade, likely longer."
- Ken Gargett, The Vintage Journal
Alex Head’s 'Old Vine' label is a tribute to the Barossa’s greatest resource: its historic vineyards. While his Single Site releases zoom in on specific blocks, this wine zooms out to capture a broader regional picture, blending fruit from some incredible sites across both the Barossa and Eden Valleys.
For the 2024 vintage, the base is the Riebke Schrapel block in Ebenezer (planted in the 1950s), supported by 1960s plantings on Mengler’s Hill and the high-altitude Mattschoss Trial Hill site (planted in the 1940s). Interestingly, Alex has also included a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon from Moculta and Ebenezer to add a little structural spine to the blend.
The winemaking is all about restraint rather than extraction. Alex uses gentle techniques to ensure the wine retains elegance, ageing it for 11 months in French oak barriques (20% new). The result is a wine that delivers the trademark opulence and sweet fruit richness of old vines, but with a freshness and focus that keeps it vibrant. It is robust, powerful and classically Barossa, yet wonderfully balanced.
The Head Red Shiraz is considered the trailer or preview to each vintage of the Head premium single-vineyard Shirazes.
This is made from the barrels that barely missed the cut on the SV Shiraz; The Blonde; The Brunette and The Contrarian. Made with all the love and care that go into his top-flight releases, Alex Head releases this as a younger wine as something to enjoy whilst waiting for his premium releases to mature.
It's plush, full-bodied yet built for early drinking in the best possible way. For easy-drinking but serious Barossa Shiraz, it's hard to go past this release.
Alex Head's Head GSM is fresher take on a classic Barossan Grenache blend, focusing on perfume, drinkability, and offering great value.
Alex's passion for contemporary Barossa wines shines through in this blend. He collaborates with small, sustainable growers, sourcing grapes from some of the region's oldest vineyards, up to 100 years old.
The Grenache offers vibrant fruit, Shiraz adds dried herb notes, and Mataro brings spice and tannin, creating a harmonious blend with plush fruit, fresh acidity and a long, spicy finish.
This is a versatile mid-week slurper, perfect with pizza, pasta, or on its own. As with all of Alex's wines, it delivers superb value, and an honest taste of the Barossa through a modern lens.
