Description

The Old Vine Grenache is one of Alex's specialities and arguably one of the first and most important Grenache wines of the modern era to inspire the flood of more refined Grenache we see emerging across Australia today.

The fruit from this 166-year-old vineyard gets full opportunity to show its true character. An extraordinary wine for its price. It shows a rare restraint in the use of oak. It's all about the dark rich fruit, and with fruit this beautiful, by Jove, it should be! Lots of baked earth and spice flavours too.

An excellent contemporary example of Australia's world-class Grenache capabilities.

"The fruit is gorgeous, pure and weighted just so, the tannins are billowing and pillowy and the acidity is bright. Once again '24 comes up with the goods."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "Raspberry, mint, some redcurrant jelly, a juicy expression of Grenache, with a light peppery grip to tannin, a fresh feel to this, and a cool and lively feel. Very nice. Peanut and red fruits ahoy." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "A pretty-as-a-picture grenache sourced from a 1940s-planted site at Trial Hill, Pewsey Vale and a 1880s-planted block in Ebenezer. 10% whole bunch and matured in neutral oak for 11 months. Aromas of red plum, raspberry and wild strawberry with a touch of cranberry lift and hints of gingerbread, cola, exotic spice, citrus blossom, dried citrus rind, charcuterie and light amaro nuance. The fruit is gorgeous, pure and weighted just so, the tannins are billowing and pillowy and the acidity is bright. Once again '24 comes up with the goods." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "This one is a
nod to the ancient way Barossa families made their wines, through the use of bush vines, and also a nod to the Barossa Old Vine Charter, looking at the age of vineyards. Overall, the vines come from Ebenezer and Trial Hill vineyards, planted between 1858 and the 1940s, the latter from Pewsey Vale. Just 300 cases made. A small percentage of whole bunches were included in the fermentation and maturation was in large, neutral French oak. Pale crimson/garnet in colour, at the moment this is slightly subdued, but we do have notes of herbs, strawberries, kirsch and florals. It is silky and seductive in texture, with very fine tannins and a lingering finish. A lovely wine which promises to reach higher levels over the next decade. Drink now–2035." - Andrew Caillard MW (The Vintage Journal)

In 2009, I decided to make Grenache the way Barossan families made table wines many generations ago, to honour the years of back-breaking work required for keeping the bush-vine vineyards feasible and sustainable. The use of the word β€˜Old Vine’ shows respect to the Barossa Old Vine Charter which was set up to celebrate and maintain the special sites & history of the Barossa. In 2024, we were again in the middle of β€˜La Nina’s’ milder conditions which meant the best Grenache sites were found in the warmer sites. A new dry-grown Grenache site (Planted 1940s) on Trial Hill (Pewsey Vale) at 480m altitude performed particularly well this season and forms the backbone of the wine. The final blend also contains a smaller amount of the Riebke vineyard of Ebenezer (Planted 1880s) at 290m altitude and β€˜Stonegarden’ (Planted 1858) of Springton.

Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country.

With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out. These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone β€” no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
