Description

Joe Holyman is widely considered one of Tasmania's best Chardonnay producers. While his top-tier 'Holyman' label has become one of the most collectable and scarce wines on the island, the Stoney Rise Chardonnay offers a chance to drink his signature style at a fraction of the price.

The 2025 vintage was a fantastic growing season in Northern Tasmania, characterised by warm days and cool nights. Sourced from a small vineyard in the North West, this year's release sits in a beautiful sweet spot. It offers a rich, fleshy palate driven by white peach and stone fruits, but it is kept in check by Joe's trademark "grippy acidity."

It is textural, lasting and incredibly drinkable. Dollar for dollar, this remains one of the smartest buys in Tasmanian wine.

94 points - "This is a distinctive, saline and savoury wine. It has a little struck match, green melon, lime and grapefruit, chamomile tea, a spicy and nutty character too. It’s bright and crisp, distinctly umami chicken stock flavour with green apple and kombucha tang, a fine chalky grip to texture, with bright and zingy finish of fine length. Very interesting, but also lovely to drink. A bit Euro, electric and eccentric." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Vintage 2025 was a fantastic growing season here in the north of Tasmania, warm days and cool nights was the way it was.

Our 2025 Stoney Rise Chardonnay fruit is from a small vineyard in the NW of Tasmania. The wine is showing some white peach and stone fruits, with a rich fleshy palate. The flavours are lasting and are finished off by our usual grippy acidity, with hints of oak.

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
