Description

Chris Catlow’s Sentio wines are mostly Beechworth-focused, but when the right fruit pops up elsewhere, he’s not one to say no. This Gamay comes from the Upper King Valley and is all about crunch, spice, and sheer drinkability. No overthinking, just a seriously good time in a glass.

It’s Gamay done three ways - some whole bunch, some whole berry, some a mix of both - fermented in concrete and aged in a combo of foudre and small oak. The result? Bright, juicy fruit with a bit of savoury grip, the kind of wine that disappears way too fast.

A fun, expressive take on Gamay that’s as at home on the dinner table as it is straight from the esky on a warm afternoon.

With fruit sourced from the high altitude Darling Koombahla vineyard at Whitfield, expect a gamay of bounce and energy, not to mention some lively peppery spiciness. Perfect gamay appeal here in ripe raspberry, cherries, violet aromatics and earth, with fresh-picked bouquet garni and even fresher black peppery notes Smooth running, with lively acidity in tow; it's ready to go. So good.

A bunch of forest berries with full ripeness to match, freshness comes into play through acidity, with a crunch, but also cinnamon and white pepper spice and stony tannins. Amongst red cherries, there are flickers of blueberries here, maybe blue plum skin too. Cheerful wine with perky texture but it does have a slightly elevated alcohol, so this is definitely one to chill to take the edge off.

    Great Gamay

Delightful alternative to Pinot Noir. Fresh and pairs with pretty much anything you choose to eat.

    Gamay extraordinaire

Loads of berry and cherry flavours. This wine has supplanted our purchases of Pinot Noir.

Black maraschino cherry, spice lift.

The Darling family have been growing gamay at their Koombahla vineyard since 1998 and continued grafting more of their vineyard over to the variety in 2016. The vineyard, first planted by Guy Darling in 1970, sits at 250-350m asl on red volcanic loam with an easterly aspect.

Handpicked over several parcels and fully de-stemmed. Fermented in concrete. Aged in a combination of foudre (1200 and 2000 litre) and small-format French oak, offering tighter structure and purity in the fruit profile.

A well balanced wine ready for drinking now.

Bottled under DIAM closure.
