Description

The 2024 Syrah blends fruit from Hilltops and Canberra – two regions that balance each other out beautifully. Most of the fruit comes from a warm slope at Freemans Vineyard in Prunevale, bringing plush berries and a smooth, generous core. A smaller portion from Poachers Vineyard in Murrumbateman adds spice, lift and a touch of savoury detail.

Hamish keeps the winemaking pared back as always – gentle fermentation, maturation split between ceramic and old French oak. The idea is to capture brightness and shape without losing that natural flow he’s known for.

It’s vibrant and aromatic, showing red and blue fruit, pepper and subtle herbs. The palate is silky and open, fresh through the finish but with enough depth to hold your attention. A beautiful balance of ripeness and restraint, and just way to easy to drink!

Fun is not an adjective I would usually use to describe a wine.

But this is what I have to say. How much fun is this wine!

Props to all involved, great drop that brings joy from the fist opening to the remorseful last drop.

    Thanks.

A lovely, very drinkable NOW red

A lovely soft palate that is so enjoyable to drink right now. Sweet but fruity, just gorgeous. Would be even better with a few more years.

A vibrant, medium-bodied Syrah with juicy red fruit at its core, layered with fine lines and detail.

Vineyard: Freeman, Hilltops and Poachers, Murrumbateman.

Soil type: Granite, wind swept red sand.

Picking date: February 27 & March 11

Winemaking: Two vineyards contribute to this blend. The main parcel hails from a warmer slope on the Freemans Vineyard in Prunevale, Hilltops. This fruit sees a gentle fermentation and matures in ceramic, preserving the vivid berry roulade profile and keeping the palate fresh and fruit-forward.

The remaining 20% comes from a few select barrels from the beautiful Poachers Vineyard in Murrumbateman. These barrels bring finesse and spice—subtle layers that add intrigue and length, supporting the seductive fruit at the wine’s core.

Maturation: Ceramic and French oak

Mada Wines

Mada wines sees ex-Eden Road operational winemaker Hamish Young venture out on his own for the first time.

Sourcing fruit from some great sites across the Canberra and Hilltops regions, his first releases were a smash hit and his star continues to rise.

His wines show a fresher and more modern side of NSW wine, all about vibrant fruit and ease of drinking. He looks for texture in his aromatic whites, freshness in his delightful red wines, each release sees him refine his own 'house style' a little more.

This is a Canberra producer to watch for the future - one of the new crop shaking up the regional scene.

As Mike Bennie once said, "Mada Wines should be put on your list of wines to watch, or indeed to buy a bit of....then probably a lot of."
