Description

The Swinney family have been farming in Frankland River for over a century, and their approach to rosé is every bit as considered as their reds. The 2024 Mourvèdre Rosé is built from dry-grown bush vines, with a small dash of Vermentino and Cinsault for lift and freshness. The fruit is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and naturally fermented in old French oak, then left on lees for five months to build texture.

It’s pale, savoury and structured – more a serious table wine than a poolside sipper. There’s fine acidity, a gentle grip and plenty of spice sitting alongside red fruit and citrus notes. The warmth of the 2024 season gave the wine extra depth, but it still feels clean and energetic.

This is classic Swinney: precise farming, gentle winemaking and a clear sense of place. A rosé with real shape and detail, built for food and proper drinking.

Mourvèdre, such a great rosé grape, right next to Nebbiolo. I feel they carry a lot of savoury and wild, almost meaty characters. None of that bubble-gum stuff. Plenty of fine detail: orange blossom, raspberry, curd, gentle note of nougat, depth of flavour, dark fruit tones, aftertaste of bramble, blackberry leaf with a bitter edge, meatiness and black pepper, a pomegranate tang. A serious, proud rosé. All class.

The 2024 Mourvèdre Rosé is lean and spicy in this hot year, and the wine is blessed with detail and spice that elevates beyond the usual standard of rosé we see in the Australian market. It has phenolic structure and shape, depth of flavor and good length to boot, and this vintage somewhat reminds me of rosé Champagne/sparkling wine, with enormous flavor complexity beyond its structural confines. This is very good indeed. 13.2% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Produced from estate-grown, bush vine mourvèdre. A fine, sleek rosé with tension and elegant tannin profile, innate freshness, a tart report of pleasing, sour cherry, cranberry tang and some fine rosehip tea characters. Succulent and refreshing, lighter weight but with good tension and structure. A serious pink wine on hand.

Our Mourvèdre Rosé is drawn from dry-grown, bush vines on the ironstone gravel hilltop of our Powderbark vineyard. It’s rosé that’s built from the ground up, born from the same level of viticultural detail that goes into all our wines. Seasoned with a little Vermentino and Cinsault, co-fermented naturally and elevated in old oak, the result is pale and precise, textural and savoury with the inherent drinkability that lies at the heart of every great rosé.

Tasting Notes:

Pale salmon An inviting mix of strawberry marshmallow, honeysuckle, Jonathan apple and marzipan. Elegant, complex, intense and refreshing with flavours of white grapefruit, ginger and crab apple. Medium bodied with refined briny acidity balancing a textural and flavoursome palate.

Vineyard Notes:

Our collective aim is to produce an outstanding Rosé with what we think is the best possible base material available - Mourvèdre. The fruit was hand-picked from bush vine Mourvèdre with the inclusion of a small percentage of Vermentino & Cinsault for subtle complexity.

Production Notes:

The fruit was whole bunch pressed together, filled directly to seasoned French oak barriques and then naturally fermented. Following fermentation, the wine rested on lees for five months to preserve freshness and build texture prior to bottling.

Swinney

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are fining a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with Rhys Thomas as viticulturist and vineyard manager since 2021, and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.
