Description

Esmé Rouge is Gamay from the Sinapius vineyard in Pipers River, grown, made and bottled on-site by the family. The block was planted in 2013 by Linda Morice and the late Vaughn Dell, at a time when very few in Tasmania were backing the variety. More than a decade on, the vines have settled in and the decision looks spot on.

The 2024 release is 100% estate grown and dry farmed, fermented as whole bunches with a carbonic start, then aged for seven months in a large old foudré and seasoned barriques. No fining or filtration.

It’s fragrant and bright – wild strawberry, sour cherry, a little spice and violets. There’s that stemmy crunch through the palate, with juicy red fruit and fine tannins bringing shape and bite.

A lean, structured take on cool-climate Gamay, and one of the most individual reds to come out of northern Tasmania. Only a handful of barrels made.

"I just love this little wine... Don't be afraid to pop it in the fridge for a while if the situation warrants such an action. Very nice indeed!"

    Always a winner

This never fails to be a great drop. Beautiful light, yet serious Gamay with a slight funk (in a good way.)

Truly one of the best expressions of Gamay in Australia, and certainly the most unique I’ve tried.

    Good drop

Paired well with fish. Great choice if you want to stick with red.

    Exceptional juicy number

Nice and juicy red, with an acidic fizz on the tongue. All your red fruits in perfect balance. Touch drier than the French Gamays, but is excellent Australian wine.

This Estate Grown Gamay, sourced from a dry-grown, high-density planted vineyard established in 2013, offers a truly expressive wine that showcases the character of its unique terroir. Planted with 7,700 to 11,111 vines per hectare, the grapes are carefully handpicked to maintain the integrity of the bunches, before undergoing a traditional whole-cluster carbonic maceration for two weeks. After pressing, the wine is aged for seven months in a 1500-litre foudré and old barriques, bottled without fining or filtration in February 2025.

The result is a wine that opens with an intensely perfumed nose, offering aromas of wild strawberry and redcurrants, layered with hints of violet and wild fennel. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a savoury depth from the whole-bunch stem elements, complemented by juicy red fruits and fine, chalky tannins. As the wine opens with time in the glass, the initial savoury notes give way to sweet, dark red fruits, and the wine shows wonderful length and persistence. The finish is marked by a fine spice and vibrant acidity, making it versatile and enjoyable both at room temperature and when lightly chilled.

Sinapius

Sinapius is a premium boutique Tasmanian winery started by two young, passionate winemakers.

The couple, Vaughn Dell & Linda Morice, purchased the site when they were only 24-years-old and chose to plant their vines in the Burgundian fashion opting for high-density planting and low-yielding crops. Their small labour of love has budded into one of Tasmania's most exciting viticultural projects.

Vaughn passed away tragically in 2020, however, the Sinapius label continues under the guidance of Linda and the help of some loving friends. The Sinapius wines are of extremely high quality, made in small amounts and showcase their unique patch of dirt with transparency, purity and power.
