Description

Here's a new addition to the Sadie Family portfolio - the debut release of Sonvang. Planted in 2019 on the granite soils of the Paardeberg’s western slope, this vineyard was designed specifically to tackle the future challenges of climate change. The name translates to "Sun Catch," referencing its aspect which soaks up the afternoon sun.

Like its white counterpart Twiswind, Sonvang is a co-planted vineyard featuring a dozen Mediterranean varieties, including Alicante Bouschet, Agiorgitiko, Tinta Barocca, Grenache, Cinsault, and more obscure grapes like Pontac and Lleudonder Pelut. The goal here is resilience and complexity through diversity. While currently picked and vinified separately, the long-term vision is for a true field blend. The 2024 debut was fermented with 30% whole bunches, resulting in a wine that Eben Sadie describes as "incredibly unique and original."

The aromatics are wild and "out-there," offering notes of smoked paprika, hickory, bell pepper, rosemary, and struck flint. It feels almost volcanic in character. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied with pliant dark berry fruit and a granular, gripping texture. It is a powerful debut that signals a new chapter for Swartland red blends.

"This intriguing, aromatic red has aromas of smoked paprika, black currants... rosemary and Sichuan peppercorns... It’s vibrant, exotic and crunchy... Wild, spicy and powerful, but refined."

Sadie Family Wines

One of the tearaway producers of the revitalised Swartland wine scene, Sadie Family Wines has had an astronomical rise to fame on the international stage.

Owner and winemaker, Eben Sadie, first found acclaim under the banner of Terroir Al Limit where he was a co-founder alongside Dominik Huber. In the same way that Terroir Al Limit helped redefine what wine could taste like from Priorat in Spain, Sadie handles his family wines and vines with that same ruthless attention to detail.

These wines perfectly articulate a sense of place. Sadie's transparency in winemaking and obsessive farming practices reveal intense, tightly-wound wines with distinct personality. These are now some of South Africa's most keenly sought-after artisan wines. Worldwide allocations are minuscule and hotly contested. As little as a handful of bottles make it to Australia each year. Secure these rare birds while you can.
