Description

This is Grenache that thinks it’s Pinot Noir. Sourced from the Piekenierskloof highlands, the 'Soldaat' (Soldier) vineyard sits at a dizzying 780 metres elevation, making it one of the highest sites in the Cape. The 55-year-old ungrafted bush vines dig into decomposed granite soils, producing fruit with incredible transparency.

The altitude is the key here. It gives the wine a lift and elegance that recalls the great Garnachas of the Gredos mountains in Spain. Eben keeps the winemaking raw to preserve that energy, fermenting in concrete tanks with a portion of whole bunches and ageing it without any oak.

In the glass, it is vibrant and fragrant. You get bright notes of sliced strawberry, pomegranate and sour cherry, layered with a savoury, smoky spice. It feels ethereal and silky, but there is a distinct 'wet stone' minerality and fine tannin grip that keeps it structured. At just over 13% alcohol, it is refined, fresh and effortlessly drinkable.

Sliced strawberries, pomegranates, rose hips, orange rind and wet stones on the nose of this supremely elegant, fragrant red. Sour cherries, too. It’s medium-bodied, very fresh and silky, with very fine tannins, seamless but present. Persistent and salty at the end. Great expression of grenache. Fermented and aged in concrete.

Erasmus van Zyl's farm in Piekenierskloof, located on quartz and sandstone soils, supplies the grapes for this ethereal old-vine Grenache, described by Eben Sadie as "transparent." Fermented with 30% whole-clusters, it has aromas of fresh earth and Campari spices, flavours of pomegranate and red cherry, remarkable freshness and some underlying tannic grip. 2027-32.

Citrusdal Mountain. The Soldaat is 100% Grenache from a parcel of 55-year-old vines in the highland Piekenierskloof Ward (just shy of the Swartland catchment, going north to Citrusdal). The vineyard got its name from the foot soldiers (piekeniers) who once used this area as a lookout. Sadie’s east-facing parcel sits around 780 metres—one of the Cape’s highest elevations—and the soil is decomposed granite. The vines here are unirrigated and still on their own roots.

Eben notes that The Piekenierskloof Pass has firmly positioned itself as the leading location for Cape Grenache, capable of giving vibrant, perfumed wines with lifted red fruit, smoky, spicy notes and earthy minerality. This wine calls to mind the elegant, perfumed Garnachas from Gredos and San Martín de Valdeiglesias in the Madrid highlands, yet with precision and class all its own. “The entire wine is an exhibition of elegance,” says Eben.

Sadie Family Wines

One of the tearaway producers of the revitalised Swartland wine scene, Sadie Family Wines has had an astronomical rise to fame on the international stage.

Owner and winemaker, Eben Sadie, first found acclaim under the banner of Terroir Al Limit where he was a co-founder alongside Dominik Huber. In the same way that Terroir Al Limit helped redefine what wine could taste like from Priorat in Spain, Sadie handles his family wines and vines with that same ruthless attention to detail.

These wines perfectly articulate a sense of place. Sadie's transparency in winemaking and obsessive farming practices reveal intense, tightly-wound wines with distinct personality. These are now some of South Africa's most keenly sought-after artisan wines. Worldwide allocations are minuscule and hotly contested. As little as a handful of bottles make it to Australia each year. Secure these rare birds while you can.
