Description

Clos Lojen is the entry point into the Ponce world, and it remains one of the greatest "case-buy" bargains in Spain. Sourced from seven different parcels of 40- to 60-year-old vines, it’s designed to be a pure, high-energy expression of Bobal. Because Juan Antonio uses 100% whole-bunches and carbonic maceration - a nod to his time spent in Beaujolais - the fruit stays incredibly bright and "crunchy."

The 2024 season saw lower yields due to an ongoing drought, which has given the wine a bit more structure and muscle than the 2023, yet it maintains its signature 12.5% alcohol. It’s packed with stewed cherries and blood orange, underpinned by earthy savouriness, toasted hazelnuts, and what Mike Bennie describes as a "gravelly haze" of fine tannins.

It’s an effortless, "soif" style of red that sits somewhere between a top-tier Gamay and a spicy Italian red. While it’s built for immediate, high-volume drinking, the limestone-clay soils provide enough complexity and grip to make it a serious food wine. If you're looking for the ultimate value-for-money Spanish red, this is it.

"This could be my value Spanish wine of the year – nuts! ... Loose but with a gravelly haze through it all, lots of perfume, brightness under the savoury elements. Effortless drinking."

93 points - "This could be my value Spanish wine of the year – nuts! Soft, sweeping red wine of earthy savouriness under stewed cherries, blood orange, toasted hazelnuts, black pepper and wet, sweated, Italianate herbs. An almost soif gamay feel to the wine, loose but with a gravelly haze through it all, lots of perfume, brightness under the savoury elements. Effortless drinking." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

93 points - "The super-affordable 2024 Clos Lojen comes from a year that continues the warm and dry conditions of 2022 and 2023 but with lower yields and very healthy grapes. It fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts in open-top and well-seasoned 4,500-liter oak vats and matured in a combination of oak vats of different sizes—4,500-, 10,000- and 15,000-liter ones—for six months. Each plot was harvested at the right time, which seems to have increased precision in the cuvée, a fruit-driven, primary and juicy red with similar alcohol as in previous years, 12.5%, a pH of 3.6 and 5.7 grams of acidity. This is a lot more serious than a young and juicy red; it has fruit but with a complexity of flavors, a medium-bodied palate and very fine tannins. It's approachable and ideal with food, but it also has the potential to keep in bottle. It's a champion for quality/price, one to buy by the case. It has one of the lowest production volumes in recent times, 45,000 bottles. It was bottled between April and June 2025." - Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

Customer Reviews

Clos Lojen Bobal is the product of a single 4,500 litre old oak vat ferment, using whole bunches and carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts — a winemaking style which will be familiar to Beaujolais aficionados.

Fruit for Clos Lojen comes from Ponce's most southerly vineyard, which is picked in early August to retain freshness. It's full of crunchy, bright, intense fruit characters, underpinned by a lively acid line.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
