Description

Patrick Sullivan is a name synonymous with exceptional Australian Chardonnay.

Here's a top-value way to sample his sensational stylings with this variety, with this very reasonably-priced entry-level Pat Sullivan wine!

This, only the third-ever release, continues to honour the volcanic soils of Southern Australia with a wine that strikes a lovely balance between richness, well-defined fruit, and distinctive soil-derived minerality.

The vineyards are nestled along Australia's unique limestone coast. This region is the world's third-largest volcanic plain, harbouring approximately 400 dormant volcanoes. Who knew?!

Pat's deep-rooted connection to this area, where he spent much of his childhood, fills him with tremendous enthusiasm as he offers this great modern representation of Australian Chardonnay.

94 points & Top 100 Wines of 2024
"Patrick Sullivan is one of the country’s most thoughtful winemakers; beneath his mop of unruly hair ticks a brain obsessed with how volcanic-derived soils can shape a wine. He works mostly across Gippsland, Victoria, but for this wine he heads across the South Australian border to Mt Gambier. The result is a fine, sculpted chardonnay, its gentle curves laced with a sparkling minerality."
- Nick Ryan (The Australian)

"It feels familiar, a wine from the past, the affordable cellar dweller for the flavourtown chardonnay drinkers, and it’s great for that."

92 points - "The 2023 rendering of this wine was a ripper for the bucks, and this follows that trajectory. Mixed Coonawarra fruit and some from surrounds maketh the blend.

It pours with a light golden colour which reminded me of SA chardonnay of ye olden times. Scents and flavours match that, cinnamon toast, wheat, light honeyed notes, peach, red apple and yet almond and cashew nut there too. It’s quite soft but manages enough chalky fringes from refreshment factor. It delivers a sense of ‘this will get butter and supple with time in cellar’. It finishes slightly toasty and wheaty again. It feels familiar, a wine from the past, the affordable cellar dweller for the flavourtown chardonnay drinkers, and it’s great for that." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

The balance of buttery and fruity!

What a perfectly balanced Chardonnay! It’s fresh with vibrant white peach flavors, complemented by a touch of creaminess. The crisp, lemony acidity provides a lovely finish. Absolutely delightful!

Patrick Sullivan

The wild-haired Patrick Sullivan is a farmer first, a winemaker second.

His pride and joy is his vineyard in the Strzelecki Ranges in the Gippsland G.I. of Victoria. On this plot of land, Pat farms with organic principals alongside Bill Downie, one of the most revolutionary winemakers of his generation.

Bill takes the Pinot Noir from the vineyard, Pat takes the Chardonnay. The Chardonnay wines emerging from his cellar are some of the most exciting in the country. Addicted to volcanic soils and the power and energy that those soils bring to Chardonnay, Pat is amassing a formidable stable of Chardonnays that articulate a small slice of Australia's ancient terroir.

The wines are un-tinkered with, fermented in neutral vessels with little or no sulphur and are made to express their special site and the vagaries of vintage. In Pat's words, "The wines are inspired by emotion, a moment in time and a sense of place."
