Description

Marco Lubiana is one of the country's most exciting young winemakers, and the 2024 release only further reinforces this reputation.

Marco’s estate blocks in the Derwent Valley are starting to show real personality now, and the 2024 season gave him exactly the kind of fruit that lets that shine. It was a more typical year after the cool, slow 2023 vintage. Spring was steady, summer warm and dry, and the Pinot came off in great condition most of it picked by mid March. Clean bunches, good flavour, no stress in the winery.

This release brings together fruit from the close planted young vines, the older alluvial block lower down the slope, and a few parcels from the higher clay and chalk soils. It’s a mix of clones and sites that Marco seems to understand instinctively. With better phenolic ripeness in 2024, he pushed whole bunch to around 50%, and brought in a little more new oak about 15% to give the wine some extra backbone and perfume.

The result is a Pinot that feels both serious and approachable. Red and darker fruits, a savoury line, and tannins that are firmer and more structural than you might expect. It’ll age well, but if you’re opening it now, a quick decant really helps it open up.

"Serious feeling wine, tense and firm; reserved and for the long term. Very good."

Very spicy, savoury, juicy and quite dusty at the same time. Fine, lacy tannins shape things well. Dark cherry, crunchy red currants, toasty cinnamon, some bitter herbs and a touch of dark chocolate. Serious feeling wine, tense and firm; reserved and for the long term. Very good.

Fragrant, energetic aromas of dark cherries, red currants, orange peel, dried roses, sandalwood and crushed stones. The palate is savory with bright acidity and firmly framed tannins, giving notes of cranberries, pomegranate, iron and subtle spices. Long, mineral and finely balanced with an underlying savory edge. Drink or hold.

    Top Drop!

A really pretty fragrant nose of violet, musk and dandelion 💐 with a miraculous magenta complexion.

On the palette you have pomegranate, cherry, raspberry, cranberry, red pear, goji berry, vanilla and a gentle splash of oak.

This is a razor sharp wine that has been assembled with lots of love and delicate care.

Sitting at 13% ABV, high acidity, medium tannins, light body and a long clean finish it went down perfectly well with a steak pomme frites 🥩🇫🇷

    Lovely Tassie berry Pinot

Raspberry and earthy blackcurrants with a hint of spice. Fresh and drinking well now but no doubt will continue to evolve. Very enjoyable.

Vineyard: Biodynamic Lubiana Estate Derwent valley Vineyard: A blend of the close planted block (5 year old) clay over chalk, lower alluvial pinot block (25 year old) mudstone/sand, and some higher up clay/chalk pinot blocks (16 year old) clay over gravel/chalk. A large diversity of clones from these blocks I grow on the estate.

The 2024 season in a nutshell was a return to normal conditions, coming off a very cool and mild 2023 season. The spring/early summer was fairly typically with rain and sunshine - not too hot or cold. This led into a dry warm summer most days in the mid to high 20’s. Harvest was a little early for some blocks of pinot, due to the dry conditions. All the grapes were hand sorted/ picked with the majority of the grapes picked in the middle of March 2024. The fruit was very clean and I was very happy with the quality. The winemaking was very easy as the fruit was in fantastic condition. The pinot noir from 2024 had much better phenolic ripeness compared to 2023, therefore, more whole bunch was incorporated into the winemaking. The proportion sitting around the 50% mark. I used a touch more oak, with around 15% new oak barriques. These have given the wine more tannin and perfume. I believe this wine will age well given this structure and tannin profile. If drinking early I would recommend a decant. Little to no sulphur used in the fermentation, 100% wild yeast, one racking in spring, 12 months in French oak barrels (228L), bottled unfiltered on site. Free sulphur around 25ppm.

Marco Lubiana

Marco Lubiana is the latest of his bloodline to take up winemaking. The Lubianas have made wine in Italy since the 1800s, with Marco's father Steve founding his acclaimed biodynamic wine label, Stefano Lubiana, in Tasmania in 1990.

Marco has a degree in Oenology and Viticulture and biodynamic farming in his blood. His wines are carefully farmed and brought to bottle with a mostly natural methodology. An established and well-known vineyard recently purchased by the Lubianas is the source of the fruit. His first releases are incredibly good. Clearly the grape doesn't fall far from the vine.

Get in early on Marco's wines. As word gets out, these premium Tasmanian cuveés will disappear in no time.
