Description

The Jericho family have a real knack for making wines that actually fit the way we drink. Their Tempranillo is a proper joven style - meaning it’s built for freshness and speed rather than sitting in a dusty cellar. They source the fruit from old vines in the northern reaches of the Adelaide Hills, where the cooler climate keeps the aromatics high and the tannins soft.

The trick here is that they press the juice off the skins midway through ferment. It’s a clever move that skips over those harsh, grippy tannins Tempranillo is known for, leaving you with something incredibly plush and silky. A quick stint in old French oak adds just enough shape without messing with the bright fruit.

It’s a total red-fruit explosion of strawberries, pomegranate, and black cherry, with a subtle savoury twitch of tobacco leaf and bay leaf hiding in the background. The texture is crunchy and bright, making it dangerously easy to knock back. This is exactly the kind of mid-week red you want next to a pizza or some spicy chorizo.

92 points - "This Adelaide Hills–sourced Tempranillo is made in that delightfully fresh, fruity, early-drinking Joven style. It’s bright, it’s juicy and lively, with typical red fruit nuances. Light, bright & juicy
Joven, meaning young, or youthful is the name given to this style of Tempranillo, and lively freshness is certainly the name of the game in this wine. The nose is seriously aromatic; strawberries, juicy pomegranate and black cherries mingle with an ephemeral hint of fresh tobacco and dried bay leaf. The palate is smooth and supple; soft tannins and zippy fresh acid are the ideal complement to the plush fruit weight.

Wine Notes
Unlike most red wines, our joven style of Tempranillo is pressed off skins midway through fermentation. This early pressing prevents the extraction of bold and harsh tannins that are typical to Tempranillo from the skins into the wine, resulting in a plush, juicy, and endlessly drinkable style of red wine. A short time maturing in seasoned French oak, before early release preserves the fresh and intensely red-fruited character of this wine.

Vineyard
The vineyard is in the north of the Adelaide Hills near Kersbrook giving a cool dry climate. Gentle east facing slopes provide shallow loam soils ideal for these old vines to grow small grape bunches, giving intensity of flavour and soft tannins.

Food Pairing
The juicy red fruits and plush structure of this wine are suited to perfectly grilled BBQ meats; spring lamb and spicy chorizo sausage are ideal pairings.

Cellaring
Enjoy this wine within 2-3 years of release.
