Description

Joe and Lou Holyman farm one of Tasmania’s benchmark Pinot Noir vineyards on the Tamar, where low yields and mature vines give fruit with depth, structure and clarity. The vineyard, planted in 1986, sits less than a kilometre from the river and has been tended by the Holymans for over two decades - a site they know inside out.

The 2024 release was fermented with 70% whole bunches after a one-week cold soak, using only the wild yeasts present in the vineyard. It then went to oak from the same small set of coopers that Joe uses each year, allowing the season to speak for itself. The warm, dry conditions of 2024 gave the wine more fruit weight than the 2023, but it still carries that unmistakable Holyman line of tension and grip.

In the glass, it’s layered and composed offering an awesome nose of black cherry, plum and subtle savoury tones of mushroom and coffee. The palate is full and textured, despite the low alcohol, with a firm backbone and A+ length.

It’s Pinot built to go the distance, and one of the best examples yet from this exceptional Tasmanian vineyard. Expect it to evolve beautifully over the next five to ten years.

"Cherry, dark raspberry, mint and earth, a spicy cinnamon and floral perfume too. It’s medium-bodied, well-etched with fine but firm tannin, quite ‘minerally’ too..."

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
