Description

The Coal River Pinot is firming as one of the most compelling outliers in the Giant Steps stable - cut from a darker, denser cloth than its Yarra brethren, but still shaped by the same discipline and detail.

Sourced from the Nocton Vineyard in southern Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, this site brings longer daylight hours and a cooler, maritime edge. The 2024 season was cool, wet, and slow - perfect for a gentle, steady build of flavour. Melanie Chester and her team wasted no time: the fruit was hand-picked and trucked across Bass Strait within 24 hours, arriving at the winery in pristine condition.

Fermented with a mix of whole bunches and destemmed berries, and matured in French oak (25% new) for eight months, this Pinot is brooding but composed - layered with dark cherry, black tea, cola spice and a whisper of bay. There’s a ferrous edge beneath the fruit, and a savoury, structural frame that gives it real presence.

It’s a powerful southern counterpoint to the Yarra releases - expressive, age-worthy, and totally distinct.

96 points - "Deep purple-red colour, a bold and youthful appearance. Dark cherry and liqueur cherry aromas galore; a massive, succulently sweet-fruited palate with super-impressive flavour and plushness, moving into a long palate with just enough tannin to give it structure and rein in that exuberant fruitiness. Stunning pinot noir." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "From the Nocton vineyard, planted in 1999 in the Coal River Valley. A medium, bright ruby. With its aromas of red and black fruits, subtle sous bois and allspice, this is not as dense, in a good way, as the '23. The palate is medium bodied and gently plush, and the tannins are in total harmony with the fruit. Looks as much a Giant Steps wine as a Tassie pinot. I like this a lot." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "I tasted this beside the Giant Steps Yarra Valley wines and my first words were: “Less floral, more fruit.” This brings the polish, the flavour, the seduction. It offers the freshest of red and black cherries with woodsmoke and cedar running through, a touch of mint maybe, semblances of undergrowth, gorgeous length, the tannin almost seeming to blossom itself. Beautiful wine. Complete." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Cool Climate Bliss

This cool climate Pinot is one of a kind, having tired in a vintage or two ago, compared with now. You cannot miss this delightful drop.

Giant Steps

Giant Steps is a premium Yarra Valley outfit founded by Phil Sexton and located in the township of Healesville. Beginning with the vision of original head winemaker Steve Flamsteed, Giant Steps developed an international reputation for producing some of Australia's finest examples of single vineyard Pinot Noir & Chardonnay.

In 2021 the exceptionally talented Melanie Chester joined the team as the new head of winemaking and viticulture, marking an exciting new chapter in this elite producer's story.

Every aspect of the Giant Steps process is geared towards making truly world-class wines from the vineyard to the final bottled wine. The focus is on what the Yarra does best - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz/Syrah and Bordeaux-variety blends - and showcasing the unique terroirs of some of the region's finest vineyards.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
