Description

Domaine Naturaliste's 'Sauvage' is consistently one of the best Sauvignon Blancs produced in the country. If you are expecting a standard, simple Aussie "savvy b", think again. This is a serious departure from the norm, delivering a taut, complex white wine built on high-quality French oak and incredible fruit concentration.

Sourced from the cooler southern end of Margaret River, the vines sit on gravelly soils in a maritime climate. The 2024 growing season delivered lower soil moisture and warmer spring temperatures, which naturally restricted berry size and massively amplified the flavour profile. To build real texture into the wine, it was 100% barrel-fermented and aged for 10 months in large 500L French oak puncheons (about a third new). It spent that whole time resting on its lees, which gives the wine its signature depth and richness.

It's legit premium Sauvignon Blanc; brilliantly creamy, with a mouth-filling palate that balances unexpected weight with driving acidity and tension. Expect bold aromatics of passion fruit, red currant, and orange blossom, layered with lychee, clove, and a touch of cedar spice from the oak. It drinks beautifully right now, but absolutely has the structure to age nicely for up to five years.

"It’s quite ridiculous how good Sauvage is in all sorts of vintage conditions, although the warmer ’24 does suit the variety... yum yum yum. There’s texture, tangy acidity and excellent length."

"Dubbed the ‘wild’ Sauvignon Blanc, but in my perception, it’s a pretty ‘tamed’ version of the grape... Complex wine and pretty well put together."

However, this is about building complexity, not simply a varietal wine. An amalgam of delicious flavours – from lime and lemon juice, zest and curd to fresh herbs, stone fruit, smoked bacon and lots of nutty/creamy lees and barrel fermentation flavours ... yum yum yum. There’s texture, tangy acidity and excellent length." -

94 points - "Dubbed the ‘wild’ Sauvignon Blanc, but in my perception, it’s a pretty ‘tamed’ version of the grape. Well-balanced oak seasoning comes as cashew cream and a note of vanilla slice. The elegant line of perfume is built around herbs like oregano and thyme, mint, lemon blossom, blackcurrant leaf and a touch of pineapple skin aroma. The finish is long, aromatic and pithy like pink grapefruit, with crushed oyster shells and a gently rising, warming sensation of pickled ginger. Complex wine and pretty well put together." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

94 points - "A distinctive style that winemaker Bruce Dukes has championed for some years. It shows the influence of some lovely oak that complements and builds the sauvignon blanc into something quite special. This is a wine that is so well balanced and crafted that it drinks beautifully now, but with that quality fruit and that well-weighted oak, it will handle extended cellaring to become something quite different. Intense, vibrant, with a fine, precise acidity driving through to a long finish." - Ray Jordan

Sauvignon Blanc is well adapted to our gravelly soils and maritime climate. The fruit is from the cooler southern end of Margaret River, which is renowned for its fragrant white wines. Bold aromas of red currant, passion fruit and orange blossom laced with exotic notes of lychee and clove. A creamy mouth filling palate delights the senses with an unexpected richness and depth of flavour.
