Description

This is Cullen doing what Cullen does best - letting the vineyard do the talking. Red Moon is a blend of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot from the Mangan Vineyard, planted in the mid-90s and farmed biodynamically ever since. It’s named after the lunar eclipse that coincided with harvest, which fits nicely given Vanya Cullen’s long-time commitment to farming with the moon and the seasons.

The fruit was picked by hand on fruit and flower days, fermented naturally, and raised in old oak for a short spell - just enough to let it breathe, not enough to get in the way. No fining, no additions, nothing flashy. What you get is clean, juicy, purple-toned fruit with just the right amount of edge. There’s structure here, but it’s subtle. The wine glides more than it grips.

It’s one of those wines that’s easy to enjoy young, but if you forget a few bottles in the cellar, you’ll be glad you did. Quietly brilliant stuff.

"The wine is intensely concentrated in fruit flavor and tannin, with pomegranate, mulberry, violets, licorice, fennel, blood plum and cherry. There are pink peppercorns and pressed roses, with ozone and tarmac in profusion. There's a slinkiness to this wine that I appreciate; it is cleansing like summer rain, and it is inky and just a little bit chewy. The purity of expression here is so impressive. Fermented without additions, it matured in older oak for eight months."

92 points - "Very deep and youthful purple-red colour; intense and fresh blackberry, cassis, cranberry aromas, tinged with crushed leaf and star anise. Likewise intense and bold, fresh and fruit-driven flavours of many berry fruits, sweetly ripe and charming, with silky-smooth tannins gently coating the tongue. It's malbec-driven but has none of the tomato stalk character of lesser malbecs. A brilliant, fruit-driven young red wine. (Malbec, grenache, mourvèdre, petit verdot, merlot)" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

    Good Finda

A very good wine for its price. After a good air, it was a pleasant surprise. Fascinating shiraz mataro blend, so smooth and easy.

    Luscious and bright

Really enjoyed the plump, jammy sweetness offset with a bit of rhubarb tartness. Subtle oak and great body for a lighter ABV.

The Mangan vineyard was planted in 1995-1997 and is now biodynamically certified expressing purity of site in each and every wine. This wine is called Red Moon and the Red Moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse, when light filtering through the earth’s atmosphere dapples the moon in red light. A total lunar eclipse occurred on the 16th May 2022 just after the end of another harvest here at Cullen’s.

This hand harvested fruit was destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts with no additions or fining at bottling. It was fermented in older oak for 8 months to preserve fruit weight and intensity. A blend of the unique 32% Petit Verdot, 57% Malbec and 11% Merlot this wine is all about the fruit and purity of expression. It is eminently drinkable as a young wine but also will age well under screw cap closure for at least 20 years.

Cullen

The Cullen property has been in the Cullen family since 1948 with founders Diana Madeline and Kevin John planting the first vines on the farm in 1971.

Today Cullen sits as one of the top estates in Margaret River. Their impeccable versions of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are now both considered clear regional benchmarks.

The Cullen estate is farmed with a strict adherence to the principals of biodynamic farming. Current day owner and winemaker Vanya Cullen is one of the most outspoken advocates of the benefits of these practices in the industry and her results speak for themselves.

These are extraordinary wines that hold their own against the world's best. A gem of the Australian wine scene, to be sure.
