Description

Clarence House has quietly built a name as one of Tasmania’s go-to spots for top-notch Pinot, and this 2024 release keeps that reputation firmly intact. Sitting just outside Hobart in the Coal River Valley, the vineyard’s northeast slopes and cool climate bring out all the hallmarks of proper Tassie Pinot: bright fruit, fine tannins, and that signature Coal River spice.

The wine is made with a light touch - wild ferments, a bit of whole bunch for lift and structure, and aged in a mix of new and older French oak. It’s got all the right bits: red and dark berries, a flicker of earth and spice, and a fine, chalky tannin line that keeps things tight and tidy. There’s a nice balance of elegance and fruit weight here, making it approachable now but with the bones to age if you’re patient.

Clarence House keeps proving that Tasmania isn’t just about fancy names - it’s about honest, site-driven wines that quietly overdeliver.

Crazy dark for a Tasmanian Pinot. It does not jump out of the glass, but more earthy, meaty with dark cherry in the background. Taste is Black Cherry juice, dark fruit & lightly herbal. It's not heavy, but fresh with no rough edges & a decent finish. Goes great with Red Curry Duck. Punches above it weight & unbeatable at this price.

    Price point perfect.

Way too easy to drink Chardonnay. Perfect price for a mid week drink emergency or a casual weekend long lunch.

Clarence House was built in 1830 on land which was originally the market garden for the city of Hobart. Present owner David Kilpatrick first planted vines on the north-east slopes of the property in 1998. Located in the foothills of the Meehan Ranges, halfway between Hobart and the Coal Valley, Clarence House Estate sits in a unique location atop Jurassic dolerite and basalt soils with low annual rainfall.

Planted across six blocks and utilizing a myriad of different clones. Wild fermentation with a small portion of whole bunches for perfume and structure. Aged in a combination of new and old French oak barriques and puncheons. Typical red and dark berry fruits are prominent, with floral and spice notes. Medium bodied, erring on the slightly fuller side. Ample concentration is restrained within a lithe structure farmed by ripe yet fine tannins.

Clarence House

Bought and planted by Dr David Kilpatrick in 1998, the Clarence House vineyard is made up of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Tempranillo, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

While he is very hands on, and involved in the day to day of the property, he entrusts the vineyard management, and winemaking to professionals.

Mark Hoey, a generational grape-grower looks after the vineyards, and uses his expertise in organic and biodynamic farming to nurture the vines without the use of chemical sprays or synthetic materials.

In the winery, regional superstars Anna Pooley & Justin Bubb, guide the fruit to bottle, providing their award winning expertise to their neighbour and friend David.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
