Description

This is straight-up excellent Fiano from one of the best hands in Campania. Picariello keeps things tight and clean in the winery, and it shows. The fruit comes from two cool, high-altitude sites in Summonte and Montefredane — proper mountain vineyards — and it gets picked late, which gives the wine intensity without losing freshness.

Everything here is done with a light touch: gentle press, wild ferment, no filtering, minimal sulphur. The wine stays on fine lees until the next summer, which adds a bit of weight and savoury depth without blurring the detail. You get lemon peel, green apple, a bit of almond skin, and this struck match smokiness that comes from the volcanic soils. It’s got real line and grip, not soft or round, and finishes with this pithy, stony snap that makes you want another glass.

Will age for a decade easy — but drinks bloody well already.

Importer's Notes:

The fruit for his estate-bottled Fiano di Avellino comes from two areas within the appellation, Summonte (around Picariello's house and winery), which is at 650 meters (2,100 feet) above sea level and Montefredane, at around 500 meters (1,650 feet) above sea level. The wine shows vivid, distinctive aromas and flavors of almond, herbs, citrus, and an enticing smokey/struck flint character from volcanic soil. On the palate there is bright, green-apple acidity, and great complexity. Fiano is one of the most age-worthy white wines in Italy, and this will go ten or fifteen years very easily.

Ciro Picariello’s tiny 7 hectare estate lies at the heart of Campania’s white grape region of Avellino among the Irpinian hills. More precisely, he has four hectares of Fiano and red Aglianico perched on the slopes above Summonte at 650 metres altitude on volcanic, calcareous clay and ‘pietra di rame’ (copper stone) soils. The remaining 3 ha of Fiano and Greco are to be found 10 km away in the village of Montefredane, at 550 meters altitude on more clay dominant soils.

Grapes are picked in late October and given a clean but minimal treatment in the cellar; slow and gentle pressing with only the first pressing used; the fermentation ensues with natural yeasts, the gross lees are removed shortly before the fermentation finishes and the wines are fermented completely dry), the wine is then kept in tank on the fine lees until the end of the following summer, when it is bottled. Use of SO2 is minimal; The wine is clarified naturally and not filtered. These wines are brilliant, Ciro has the touch, and these are superb, expressive and character filled wines that I feel are some of the best white wines being produced in Italy today.
