Description

While Shiraz and Grenache usually hog the spotlight in McLaren Vale, Brad Hickey has carved out a serious following for his Cinsault. Sourced from the neighbouring Lennon Vineyard - where vines were grafted onto old Semillon roots back in 2013 - this 2024 release continues his pursuit of fresher, brighter reds.

The vintage threw a few curveballs with early wind and rain, but a dry finish to the season allowed the fruit to land in a perfect spot. Brad used wild fermentation and about 20% whole bunches to build texture, resting the wine in old French puncheons for ten months. It’s a hands-off approach that preserves the variety's natural energy.

In the glass, it’s beautifully translucent and light on its feet. You get a real hit of juicy red stone fruit and cherry, lifted by a zesty citrus note - think tangerine skin or peel. There’s a savoury, spicy undercurrent running through it, almost like baking spice and white pepper, but it remains super fresh. At just 12% alcohol, it’s vibrant and medium-bodied, making it a prime candidate for a quick chill in the fridge.

"The general feel is goodness and easy drinking, a finer boned cinsault with faint game meat and dried rose petal notes lending charm. A nice thing to sip on."

    Delicious

Absolutely delicious. Great slightly chilled too

Made from a block of Cinsault vines which we grafted to a former Semillon patch at neighbouring Lennon Vineyard in 2013.

Vinted from hand selected fruit and placed in an open 2 ton fermenter for 2 weeks, good component of whole cluster. Wild yeast did their job and then it all was gently basket pressed and sent to veteran French puncheons for 10 months. 2024 was a year of three parts; stormy winds during flowering then lots of rain in Dec and Jan followed by nice even dry Feb and March. This is the eighth vintage of CINSAULT made at the Brash Higgins winery.

‘Ruby in hue, translucent, the nose is black cherry starburst with notes of blood orange zest, ginger, nutmeg and white pepper. The palate is medium bodied, bright cherry/red fruit notes, well-balanced and vibrant and the finish is clean and refreshing; laden with interweaving cherry, ginger and white pepper notes.’ – Brad Hickey, Vinitor, 2 July 2025.

Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.
