Description

The "Light Dry Red" is a Hunter Valley institution, a historic style that blends Shiraz and Pinot Noir. Alisdair Tulloch’s take on the classic pays homage to that history while firmly planting a flag in the modern era.

The 2024 release is composed of 70% Syrah and 30% Pinot Noir. That significant hit of Pinot is the key here - it gives the wine a bright, lifted energy that you just don't get from straight Shiraz.

True to the Aeon philosophy, it is 100% whole bunch fermented, unfined and unfiltered. This minimal intervention approach preserves a crunchy, fresh fruit character that makes the wine incredibly smashable. It is designed to be drunk straight away, ideally with good food and good company. A perfect red for the warmer months.

91 points - "Woody, bunchy, black olive led perfume. Plummy wine also with notes of raspberries and mulberries, some decent chewiness and a dose of freshly cracked black pepper. There’s a notion of amaro top note here and chocolate tannins, but the wine is very energetic and indeed lightly framed. Nice drink." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

89 points - "Dark chocolate, raspberry leaf and violet aromas lead into a medium-bodied wine that flows nicely across the palate. It offers lovely composure and elegance in its youth and a nice mix of ripe fruit and savoury singed flavours. Drink-now style." - Gabrielle Poy (The Real Review)

Aeon

The Tulloch name is Hunter Valley royalty, but Aeon is a distinct departure from tradition. This is the personal project of Alisdair Tulloch (fifth generation winemaker and Operations Manager at Keith Tulloch Wines) and his wife Kenisha. Born from a desire to strip winemaking back to its geological roots, the philosophy here is simple: "The variety is the language, but the geology is the story."

Alisdair farms these vineyards himself, focusing on sustainable practices to let the specific soils - whether sandy alluvial flats or iron-rich red earth - shine through. In the winery, he leans heavily into 100% whole bunch fermentation and eschews new oak (or "French trees" as he calls them) in favour of older, large-format barrels. This approach builds structure through stems rather than wood, preserving the delicate nuance of the fruit.

The result is a range of wines that feel distinctly modern yet pay homage to the region's history of "Light Dry Reds." They are savoury, nervy, and lower in alcohol, offering a structural complexity that stands apart from the plush, fruit-driven norm. These are lovely wines from the new generation of the Hunter Valley.
