Description

Joe Holyman has been playing around with a small plot of Trousseau for a few years now.

It's just the kind of variety that intrigues him. Good Trousseau is about texture and nuance as opposed to out and out power and flavour. If you've tried some of the delicious examples out of the Jura, you'll know exactly what persuaded Joe to plant it on his vineyard in the Tamar Valley.

He ferments this in amphora, bottles it without the addition of sulphur - it's a 'natural' wine in the best possible sense of the word.

Up until now, this has only been released at cellar door and to Joe's mailing list. We managed to pick up a few dozen to give you a chance to try it if you can't make it to Joe and Lou's homey cellar door.

" This is light and quite frisky, and I do like this style of wine. Strawberry, raspberry, some spice, plus a bit of savoury and kind of stony stuff, dried herbs, bright acidity, with a cranberry crunch, a little feathering of dry pumice stone tannin, sappy red fruits on a finish of freshness and lively tang. Very good. This is cleaner, and much improved over prior years, and feels like a true expression of the variety. Excellent."

"Bright ruby with vibrant redcurrant, red cherry and red apple with a beautiful struck flint complexity to its aromatic form. Spice, pressed wildflowers, turned earth, sous bois, crushed herbs and charcuterie. Lovely, spacious mouthfeel with crushed rock tannins and a lively, minerally cadence. Lovely stuff."

At its highest point the vineyard is only 30 meters above sea level, with the lowest being less than 10 meters, and it is less than 1 kilometre from the Tamar River.

We have 0.75 of a hectare of Chardonnay, 3.2 hectares of Pinot Noir and 0.2 of a hectare of recently planted Grüner Veltliner for a total of 4.2 hectares. The rows run north/south and have a row spacing of 2.2 meters and the vines are 1.2m apart giving a density of 4500 vines per hectare.

The spur pruned vines are treated individually in relation to the crop they carry. We never have more than two bunches of grapes per shoot and any vines that are weaker will only have 1 bunch per shoot which results in us averaging 1.5 bunches per shoot or 4.5 tonnes per hectare.

We are very conscious of our environment; we use minimal sprays and have not used herbicides for 3 years. We have begun to use some biodynamic preparations on the soil in an effort to build soil health which we believe will result in increased vine health.

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
