Description

Olearia comes from one of Prophet’s Rock’s higher, cooler Bendigo blocks – a rugged site that gives smaller berries and thicker skins, so the wine always has a bit more depth and muscle than the rest of the range. It’s all hand-picked, fermented with native yeast, and aged in French oak without any fancy tricks or shortcuts.

The 2023 has that classic Pujol balance – dense fruit without heaviness, fine tannins, and a quiet confidence that comes from patience rather than polish. You get the darker side of Central Otago Pinot here – black cherry, spice, a bit of forest floor – all stitched together by that mineral lift the vineyard always brings.

It’s serious but not showy – just a clear, honest read of Bendigo from a winemaker who knows how to stay out of the way.

Very subtle aromas of flowers, peaches and lavender follow through to a medium body with fine tannins that are integrated and fresh. Fruit is vivid and delicious. Drink it now and enjoy, but it will improve with age.

The flagship wine from this extremely steep, schist-based, stunning site combines the highest-elevation parcels to make the best overall representation of this unique place.

A great expression of our Rocky Point Vineyard, the 2023 Olearia has the classic energy and vibrant aromatics of this steep, schist driven site. Florals and crunchy red fruits open up to a palate that combines bright fruit with spice and linear mineral structure. This wine is drinking extremely well on release but will age slowly towards peak drinking with even more mineral complexity.

Cellaring: Decant for full expression in its youth and cellar with confidence for 10+ years from vintage.

This wine has been sourced exclusively from the highest elevation parcels on our Rocky Point Vineyard, located in the hills of Bendigo sub-region, Central Otago.

Perched at the rugged southern end of Bendigo, the Rocky Point Vineyard has some of the steepest planted blocks in Central Otago. The site rises from 226 metres to 351 metres, walking through the vines one feels the land drop away very sharply to the blue waters of Lake Dunstan below.

The metamorphic parent material of Central Otago forms the soil here, schist rock in varying degrees of decomposition – from solid slabs to pockets of fine clay. The site has very low vigour and small yields are the norm. Despite low organic matter, the soils have high mineral content so the small vines seldom show any deficiency.

A strong focus on viticulture is the foundation of the winemaking approach. Yields are consistently managed to 30-35hl/ha or approximately 4ton/ha.

Prophet's Rock

The Prophet's Rock project was founded in 1999.

The man behind the wines, Paul Pujol, has an enviable resume, having made wine all around the world.

After working his way through the French regions of Languedoc and Sancerre, he was perhaps the first foreign winemaker ever to be invited to head up an Alsatian winery, Kuentz-Bas where he made their six Grand Cru wines for three years. He also spent a formative vintage at Chambolle-Musigny in Burgundy which set the tone for his winemaking style under his own label.

The wines of Prophet's Rock come from two vineyards, the Home Block and the Rocky Point vineyard. Paul's mission is to let these vineyards speak for themselves.
