Auxey-Duresses has always lived a little in the shadow of Volnay and Pommard, but in recent years it’s become a real hunting ground for value in fine Burgundy. Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey’s 1er Cru Bas des Duresses shows exactly why. The vineyard sits at the foot of the slope on rocky clay-limestone soils, giving Pinot fruit with both brightness and depth.
The 2023 vintage brings freshness and balance to the picture, with alcohols kept in check and a line of energy running through the wine. This isn’t a heavy-handed or overly ripe Auxey – instead, it has precision and focus, red fruits wrapped in a fine frame of tannin, and a savoury, stony edge that keeps it firmly in the “serious Burgundy” camp. There’s enough structure here to reward a few years in the cellar, but it’s already showing its charm in youth.
As ever with PYCM, the quantities are painfully small, and this cuvée is a reminder that some of the best buys in Burgundy lie just outside the most famous names.
