Description

This is a great opportunity to access premium Tumbarumba Pinot Noir at a significantly reduced price from our Best Value Producer of the Year in 2025.

The "Non-Fiction" label is designed to offer exclusive, small-batch wines to Nick Spencer's direct customers that don't fit his usual production schedule. After making the strategic decision a couple of years ago to focus his main label solely on red blends, winemaker Nick was left with a surplus of high-quality, single-site Pinot Noir originally destined for his top-tier wines, which he's bottled here as a straight-up bargain.

Sourced from a top Tumbarumba vintage in 2023, half of this fruit was used in the highly rated LDR blend, while the remaining parcel was bottled separately as this limited release. It allows you to drink the exact same pedigree of fruit that usually commands a much higher price tag.

It delivers excellent mid-week drinking. It is dark but lively, with classic Pinot aromas of black cherries, sweet earth and spices. What makes this a cut above for the dollars asked is the structure - it rocks proper, chewy tannins and a long, silky finish that you rarely find in Pinot Noir at this price point. With only 100 dozen produced, it is a limited volume offer for those quick enough to secure it.

"This is a sub-$20 Pinot Noir that is characterised by its length. That’s a sentence you don’t hear often... This, it has to be said, is a lovely wine, by its own design."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

93 points - "This is a sub-$20 Pinot Noir that is characterised by its length. That’s a sentence you don’t hear often. It tastes of cherries, sweet and sour, sweet hay, poached strawberries and twiggy spices, but it’s the sinewy tannin and the carry of the finish that really pushes the quality up, and the score. This, it has to be said, is a lovely wine, by its own design." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Variety - Pinot Noir (100%)

Vintage - 2023

Region - Tumbarumba

Volume - 100 dozen

Tasting Notes - Bright red cherries, plums and strawberry aromas. The palate is lively and complex with an emphasis on red fruits and a silky long finish.

The Story

Long story short - we’ve made the decision to stop producing Pinot Noir as a single varietal under the Nick Spencer Wines label. Consequently we have some spare Pinot Noir!

In more detail

I have been crafting Pinot Noir from Tumbarumba for 16 years, and since 2018 under the Nick Spencer Wines label, we have been using it to blend with Shiraz to make up the Light Dry Red Blend (LDR). The LDR has become a cornerstone of our production and a wine we look forward to creating each year.

In 2022, I had the opportunity to harvest additional Pinot Noir beyond what we expected we would need for the LDR. After consulting with my distributors, we decided to release a varietal Pinot Noir under the Nick Spencer Wines label. The inaugural release received glowing reviews, with The Wine Front awarding it 94 points and praising it for its “delicate character of Pinot Noir, expressed effortlessly, and so very easy to drink.”

In 2023, we continued to harvest Pinot Noir, this time from what is considered a much superior vintage. Half of this exceptional fruit went into our 2023 Nick Spencer Wines LDR, a wine that will be released soon and one I am incredibly proud of. The remaining Pinot Noir was originally intended to be bottled as a standalone varietal wine under the NSW label However, I made the decision to focus the Nick Spencer Wines label exclusively on our two red blends, the MDR and LDR, to maintain the brand’s clarity and identity.

Now, I have 1000 litres (100 dozen) of exceptional Pinot Noir—half of which was blended into what I believe is one of our finest wines to date, the 2023 LDR. The remainder will be released under the Non Fiction Wines

Nick Spencer Wines

Nick Spencer is one of NSW's most decorated winemakers. Over the span of more than two decades, he has become perhaps the state's most outspoken advocate for the potential of the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular, Tumbarumba and Gundagai.

Nick's wines exemplify balance, style, immense drinkability and exceptional value for money. As his label has expanded, his winemaking has become more adventurous, now incorporating the use of amphora, sulphur-free bottlings and a more stripped-back winemaking style to highlight the quality of the fruit that these lesser-known NSW regions can produce.

He is one of the most important producers in NSW today and is the touchstone of quality for the state.
