Description

"Angelo Gaja is, without question, the most famous wine producer in Italy. Possibly one of the most famous in the world. He is credited with developing techniques that revolutionised winemaking in Italy.
- International Wine Challenge

The IDDA Rosso is the red side of Gaja and Graci’s Etna partnership - built from old-vine Nerello Mascalese grown on the volcano’s less-explored southern slopes. Sourced entirely from the Biancavilla vineyard, the fruit grows between 700–800m above sea level, where cooler nights and sandy, decomposed lava soils offer natural freshness and fine, layered structure.

The 2023 vintage is made mostly from Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio. About a quarter of the fruit is fermented with whole bunches, with fermentation split between steel and large-format neutral oak. Elevage is long and gentle: 18 months in mostly large (2,000–4,000L) French and Austrian oak vessels before blending and bottling. It’s handled with restraint, letting the detail of the site do the talking.

While Etna’s north slope gets most of the attention, IDDA Rosso proves the south side has its own story to tell - more about elegance than power, finesse over flamboyance. This is the red that quietly anchors the IDDA range.

"Crushed raspberry, rose, clove, sage and incense on a captivating bouquet. Silky and elegant with wild berries, fine tannins and a finish of liquid stone."
- Eric Guido (Vinous)

93 points - "The 2022 Etna Rosso tempts the imagination as depths of crushed raspberry come together with rose petals, ground cloves, sage leaf and incense to form its truly captivating bouquet. This is elegant and softly contoured, with silky textures and ripe wild berry fruits that swirl throughout. A core of brilliant acidity and tactile mineral tones builds tension toward the close. It leaves a pleasantly bitter tinge to linger on while tapering off with a coating of fine tannins, hints of licorice and a sensation of liquid stone." - Eric Guido (Vinous)

Importer's Notes:

IDDA means "she" in the Sicilian dialect—a term of endearment and reverence that Sicilians use to refer to Mount Etna.

This wine is predominantly Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio, and comes entirely from the Biancavilla vineyard, located on the southern slopes of Mount Etna. The site is southwest-facing and sits at an elevation between 700 and 800 meters above sea level. The vineyard was planted in 1975.

Fermentation takes place in a combination of stainless steel and seasoned wood vessels, with 25–30% whole bunches included. After fermentation, the wine is pressed off to barrel.

About 80% of the barrels used are large-format—2,000L and 4,000L—made from French and Austrian oak, with a small number of 700L barrels from the same origins. Each component is aged separately for 18 months before blending. The final wine is bottled three months after blending.

Gaja

The Gaja family has been producing wine in the hills of Barbaresco, Piedmont since 1859. But it was under the leadership of Angelo Gaja from the 1960s that the estate rose to global prominence, redefining what Italian fine wine could be. Today, his children - Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni - are guiding the next chapter of the family legacy.

Gaja’s wines are a benchmark of modern Italian winemaking - bold, polished, and built for the long haul. Single-vineyard bottlings like Sorì Tildìn and Costa Russi broke new ground for Barbaresco, while plantings of Cabernet and Chardonnay challenged tradition and put Langhe on the world stage.

Beyond Barbaresco, the family now crafts celebrated wines from Bolgheri and Montalcino, and most recently, from the volcanic slopes of Etna under the IDDA label - a joint project with Alberto Graci that’s turning heads for its purity and poise. Wherever they go, Gaja remains a symbol of innovation, ambition, and Italian excellence.
