Description

This is the purest, most energetic expression of Nebbiolo from the great Vaira family in Barolo.

The fruit is hand-picked from the younger vines on their estate holdings across Barolo, Novello, Sinio and Bricco Bertone, ranging from 7-25 years of age. The grapes are picked in the wee hours of the morning to keep them cool and maintain as many of the wonderfully fresh aromatics as possible through the winemaking process.

Every berry is handled gently, the goal to make a drinkable, expressive red that represents both region and variety truly.

Giuseppe has nailed this release - it's excellent drinking now and will continue develop beautifully in bottle over the mid term.

Varietal truth, purity of aromatics and depth are the elements we long for, in our Langhe DOC Nebbiolo. The fruit is picked in the earliest hours of the day. A gentle and long maceration retains the lift and energy of this wine. The wine is bright ruby red in colour with intense notes of violet and rose, accompanied by the freshness of ripe red berry fruits on the nose. This is an elegant Nebbiolo with herbaceous notes and perfumes of roses and red berries complemented by silky tannins and delicate acidity.

These grapes come from young Nebbiolo vines in Vajra’s own vineyards in the communes of Barolo and Novello. The vines are four to seven years old and will produce Barolo DOCG in several vintages’ time. This Nebbiolo is also enriched by grapes from the wonderful Roccabella vineyard in the commune of Sinio, planted on steep south-facing terraces.

G.D. Vajra is a small, artisanal family producer and one of the benchmark modern day producers in Barolo.

The wines are now made by the family's second generation, with Giuseppe in the winemaking driver's seat supported by his siblings; Isidoro and Francesca under the watchful eye of father and founder Aldo and their mother Milena.

These are stunning examples of the regional staple varieties, made with one eye on tradition and one on progression. With holdings in the commune of Barolo as well as Novello, Sinio and Serralunga, they cover some of the most sought-after terroir in the region and make the most of it.

As noted wine writer Antonio Galloni once wrote, theirs is “a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level”.
