Description

Siblings Hunter and Elizabeth Smith have made a name for themselves through the high quality of their elegant, European-inspired wines.

Gruner Veltliner is a tricky variety, native to Austria and hard to find in Australia. But under the Smith family's care, the grape shines. You'd be forgiven for thinking it's an Austrian wine, with all of Gruner's characteristic spice and floral notes coming through beautifully.

These grapes are grown in Frankland Estate's Isolation Ridge vineyard, sourced from just seven short rows of organically managed vines.

"Very interesting expression of Grüner here. Papaya, guava/prickly pear, lime leaf, daikon, white pepper, a slight cheesiness too. It’s cool and juicy, fine acidity and talc-like texture, something of a lime margarita flavour, and that prickly pear thing again (don’t mind me, and ouch, they are hard to prepare. Don’t attempt anything without the gloves!). It’s long and juicy to close, and quite frankly, delicious to drink. Excellent. Individual, yes, but so good."

    2021 Frankland Estate Gruner Veltliner

3.8. 2021 vintage. Straw colour. Guava, pear and flower. The palate is a little too sweet for my liking. There is also a sappy after taste. A simple wine that may go well with spices Asian food.

A lovely combination of spice and dried pear with slight citrus notes. Stone fruit dried summer grass and earthy tones are supported by delicate florals and a juicy fruitfulness. The palate is delicate but fleshed out with some textural generosity almost touching on phenolic texture giving weight and tension to this generous and luscious wine. The spice and floral mix are undeniably Grüner Veltliner. Fresh bright and delicious, this wine will age nicely and gain complexity. Organically grown, vinified and estate-bottled.

Frankland Estate

Frankland Estate are one of the leading producers in the Frankland River region of WA. Family owned and operated since 1988, their major focus is on certified organically grown fruit that reflects its terroir rather than the hand of the winemaker.

Their cool climate Rieslings are regarded as some of the best in the region and the country with several single vineyard releases that could be a contender for Australia's Best Riesling.

Frankland Estate is cutting a mean wave through the industry and picking up a lot of recognition in the process.
